My Favorite Highlighter

Highlighter has the power to give you that just had a facial glow. It lifts the cheekbones and gives an ethereal luminosity to the skin. Sounds amazing, right? It’s true but finding the right one can be a challenge.

I’ve had a love-hate relationship with highlighter for the last several years. It was always a staple.  I used it religiously to give me the youthful glow that… well… I had in my youth. The last several years, I’ve loved the idea of it, but in practice, I found that all the little sparkles that were meant to give the glow just settled into my creases and made me look older. Powder highlighters… no way.  Creamy highlighters… cakey. Liquid highlighters are okay, but making sure to use enough, but not too much, made me feel like a chemist each morning.

Then, Gucci Westman introduced the Lit Stick, and I thought I had found the holy grail of highlighters. All the glow, none of the glitter. I love it. I do, but I love it in the winter months when my skin is dull and can use the opalescent pinky color to breathe life into my skin. In the spring and summer, it just feels a bit too cool on my skin. I thought I was going to have to live a highlighter free existence until November, and then… wait for it… (cue angels singing) Nectar was introduced.

The highlighter to top all highlighters is Nectar by Westman Atelier. Mic drop. It is dewy without looking wet. It is ethereal without being a color. It is simply the perfect glow. It is a facial in a stick, pure and simple.  It is by far the most important item to keep in your purse, period, except maybe your wallet and keys. If you have had a hell of a day and have to head somewhere, a swipe on each cheekbone and you look refreshed and ready to take on the world. I would probably even swipe it on my eyelids and lips. I’m serious people, this one is a game-changer. You don’t want it, you need it.

I have been a beauty junkie for what seems like forever, but before I did anything about it, I went to law school. (Yes, my life is a little like the reverse of Legally Blonde.) Then, I worked as a prosecutor in Sonoma County after which I moved to the DC area with my husband in '97. I served as Majority Counsel to the Senate Banking Committee followed by a year-long stint at a lobbying firm. You get the picture.

It was then that I decided to act on my dream of becoming an entrepreneur. Finding my favorite beauty products proved to be impossible without stepping foot in a mall--the horror. So, I decided to bring my favorites to Alexandria. A few trips to New York and a flight to France and Bellacara was born in March 2000.
