Because Time Doesn’t Wait: Why Family Photos Matter

Why do we have portraits made of our children and loved ones? To capture their spirit? A special time in our lives? A fleeting moment that means so much?

Yes—to all of these things.

People often say to me, “My kids are too grown up. I missed my chance to do family photos.”

But my friends, I promise you this: as grown up as your children seem today, you’ll look back on photos and think how little they still looked. Tomorrow, next month, next year—you’ll always wish for a glimpse of the now.

Someone once told me, “Time is a thief.”  I’ve thought about that often as I watched my boys grow.

For babies grow up, we’ve learned to our sorrow.
So quiet down cobwebs, dust go to sleep.
I’m rocking my baby, and babies don’t keep.
— Ruth Hulburt Hamilton

Even when I paused to take it all in, the days still moved on.

People sometimes come to me, sheepishly confessing they’ve never done family photos. There’s often a little regret in their voice. A bit of sadness. Maybe even guilt.

We’ve all been there, with something in our lives. Life is full and busy, and often we look back on the things we wished we had done.

In 24 years of doing this work, I have yet to meet a single person who regretted having family photos taken.

So make the time—for yourself, your family, your friends.
Do the things you love with the people who matter.
And if you feel inspired, make time to find someone who can capture those moments through their lens.

Because these moments, they don’t keep.
