The Low-Maintenance Mom's Guide to Stylish Hair in Alexandria
I see it often, moms with hair crinkled in the back, tucked under a baseball cap or into a messy, but cute bun. There’s no shame because there simply isn’t enough time in the day. So many of my clients ask me for time-saving solutions, and I’m here to offer a few that can work for any busy woman on the go.
To start, let’s be real. You do not need to wash your hair every day. I may be stating the obvious but those with oily hair often feel they have to wash their hair every. single. day. Not only is dry shampoo a girl’s best friend, but it’s actually good to give your hair a break and let those natural oils sink in – but not too much. For dry shampoo, Kevin.Murphy’s Fresh.Hair is my go-to, because it’s light, smells amazing and works miracles.
Also, your hair is so much healthier when you aren’t using heating tools to dry and/or style it daily. Whenever I see damaged, dry hair, the usual culprits include: using your blow dryer on the highest setting or using hot tools too frequently, or without a heat protectant. I recommend I recommend Goldie Locks Blow Dry Spray.
What are some styles to look put together and save time? Yes, the said messy bun, but mix it up with a cute side braid and spray a little of that dry shampoo on. On the second day after a wash, throw in some heatless curlers before bed, or while you're listening to your child share their day…for the 8th time. :) This way any bedtime kinks that appear will mesh seamlessly with the wavy style. I also recommend a silk or satin pillowcase to keep your hair from getting frizzy during the night – and it helps reduce fine lines and the appearance of wrinkles. Win, win. And we have them at Salon deZEN.
Traveling for a family weekend away? Get a blowout done on the Thursday or Friday before. This will last you through the weekend, and be one less thing you have to worry about, especially if there’s only one bathroom!
When doing color, choose one that needs less maintenance, with more subtle highlights…one that doesn’t need to have the roots touched up as often. This may include balayage, and dimensional highlights. Even if you have grays sprouting, lowlights that complement your natural hair color can help you stave off a touchup a little bit longer. I also recommend Color WOW Root Cover Up for in between appointments.
A great cut and shorter do will not only cut down on drying/styling time, it will also help you look years younger. Two suggested styles are the tousled bob and the pixie, which I shared in a previous post: 7 Hairstyles That Will Make You Look Younger. Unsurprisingly, this article was pretty popular!
