Which Bangs Are Right For You: Emily Or Wednesday?
If you are like me, then you were anxiously awaiting season 3 of Emily In Paris. And, for the record, I’d like to say that it didn’t disappoint, although I’m a little uncertain about how they left things in that last episode.
What I am certain about is that the fashion and Parisian sites in this binge-worthy show are intoxicating. But, put aside the drama of the relationships and the alluring atmosphere of Paris, and focus on of the most talked about scenes: Season 3, Episode 3 when Emily had a major hair moment.
Did you gasp when you saw Emily resort to cutting her own bangs as she was dealing with personal drama? Mindy even coined Emily’s new look as “Trauma Bangs.” I’ll admit, as a stylist, this scene stressed me out, but Emily seamlessly pulled it off (the beauty of editing). I believe Camille said it best when she told Emily they were “chic.”
Sometimes the French just seem to be more embracing and accepting of change. And it’s true, we often long for a big change when life feels chaotic. Changing your hairstyle can be a powerful way to express your longing for a fresh start and to signify the closing of a previous chapter in your life.
Emily gives herself bangs to symbolize her decision to stay in Paris and take an uncalculated risk with the next chapter of her life. I personally love the way Emily’s new bangs frame her face and highlight her beautiful eyes and stunning eyebrows. If you are inspired by Emily’s bold hair choice and are ready to showcase your beautiful face with some well thought out fringe, let's explore a couple of banging choices:
Emily’s Modern French Fringe
This look is a nod to the 70s with long, straight, parted bangs that sweep the face in the most flattering ways. The fringe is shorter than a more traditional bang style and should be cut just above the eyebrow, rather than adorning the eyelashes. The “Modern French Fringe” arches just above the brows and then sweeps down to the cheekbones so the edges blend perfectly with the overall cut of the hair. It’s a heavy bang with a lot of texture which makes it look effortless and very versatile. If you have fine hair, adding this type of bang will make your hair appear fuller and thicker.
Wednesday Addam’s Bangs
While we’ve been talking about binge-worthy shows and bangs, I can’t help but think of another iconic bang look that is showcased on the Netflix series, Wednesday. These bangs are flooding Instagram and have become known as simply the “Wednesday Addams Bangs.” Actress, Jenna Ortega, completely rocks an enviable fringe with her traditional long braids.
People everywhere are trying to emulate this undeniably cool look. This type of fringe bang is meant to frame the cheekbone, unlike the Modern French Fringe which focuses on framing the eyes. The biggest tip to help replicate Wednesday’s sweeping face-framing bangs is to ask your stylist to cut two “V” shaped sections on both sides of your part instead of a traditional round “C” shape cut. If you are going for a more dramatic look, then ask your stylist to cut micro-fringe in the center and gradually fringe out the rest to compliment the longer sections of your hair (also known as "Bottleneck Bangs").
Whether you are an Emily or Wednesday fan or want some sort of bang style that encompasses them both, your stylist can help decide on the best style of bangs for your face shape and hair texture. My best advice is to find a picture of the bangs that you are inspired by and then show it to your stylist. Collaborating with your stylist is the best way to achieve your hair dreams.
Also, to keep up the effortlessly chic look of your new bangs, be sure to make time to head back into the salon for “fringe trims.” Most salons offer fringe trimming for free if you’re a client of the salon. Salon deZEN proudly offers this free service as we want you to be completely happy with your bang choice and not feel as though you just “trauma” cut your hair.
