Say Yes To The Dress

With January comes the sea of white. And I'm not talking about the snow that kept the kids out of school for an extra week after two weeks of Christmas vacation that I'm still recovering from. January is the kickoff of First Holy Communion season, and we are more excited than ever to help girls say yes to the dress! I realize that the large majority of readers will not be in the market for a new Communion dress this spring, but I ask that you keep us in mind and spread the word to any second-grade families who might be. Also, know that many of our dresses come in smaller sizes, perfect for flower girls, and we are happy to help with special occasion dresses and suits for weddings… so bear with me!

Monday's Child is the DMV's one-stop-shop for First Communion. There really are few other stores that carry Communion dresses in our area, and we have become experts on the special day. We have a special space next to our shop dedicated solely to Communion and carry several beautiful lines of dresses that range from $88 - $350; Customers often walk in and exclaim that it's like a mini wedding dress shopping experience. We have beautiful, classic dresses, we have simple styles, we have elaborate styles with layers of beads, lace, taffeta, and tulle. We carry shoes, veils, gloves, crosses - and suits, blazers, and ties for the boys. We feel so grateful when families come to us to find the perfect dress for this very special occasion, and we get so much joy out of seeing girls twirl in their dresses.

First Communion is usually early May, but our girls are usually eager to start shopping in January and February when we have the best stock and time to special order (boys often tend to shop a week or two before the big day - and that's okay too.)

Here are our tips:

  • Book your appointment on our website and come see us for all of your dress needs! Picking out a dress is such a memorable experience, and we want to make it as enjoyable as possible for you. We strongly recommend making an appointment so that we have staff that can help you with styles and sizes. In addition, we can help you pick the best shoes, veil, and accessories to match the dress and we're excited this year to work with a local florist on floral crowns.

  • We have the most stock at the beginning of the season, so we recommend shopping early. We are also able to place special orders, so buying your dress in February or early March allows for the best options (but don't worry, we will make sure you leave happy if you come later in the season too!)

  • Getting photos ahead of the special day makes life so much less stressful. Renée C. Gage Photography will be hosting in-studio photo shoots March 19 - 20 at Monday's Child so that you can have beautiful pictures of your child dressed up before the big day. The day of can be very busy and knowing you have beautiful pictures ahead of time takes the pressure off, and then pictures can be used for party invitations or displayed at your celebration. These timeless photos will be special for years to come and make beautiful gifts for grandparents!

Party planner extraordinaire and Monday's Child customer Kristin Longwood of Boxwood and Blooms encourages planning early! Just like buying the dress in advance is key to the best selection, thinking about your First Communion party early will give you the best selection and save time and stress close to the day.

Early May is a prime wedding and graduation season. So, if you're planning on having a gathering at your favorite restaurant, be sure to book by February to ensure you have a date. And even if you'll be celebrating six feet away in your backyard, start planning earlier rather than later, especially if you need to secure a caterer. Also, don't forget the cake! Many bakeries need two to three weeks in advance for celebration cakes!

Owner | Monday’s Child

Born and raised in Alexandria and married to a native Alexandrian as well! We love living in Old Town - just a few blocks from the store - with our three little boys and golden retriever Rumpelstiltzkin. Although my first job and real love was retail (the Lilly Pad where Mint Condition is now), I worked in Public Affairs and PR prior to buying the shop, which has really been a dream come true for me. I feel so grateful to work with our customers to find the perfect outfit for their special childhood moments. When I’m not at the store you can probably find me at an Old Town park chasing the boys or on my yoga mat.

A classic children’s boutique in Old Town, Alexandria for 40 years, we carry special occasion and play clothes for sizes newborn to 12. Located in the historic Crilley Warehouse just two blocks from the water, Monday’s Child is your go-to shop for baby gifts, baptism gowns, holiday dresses and outfits, boy’s blazers and ties, First Communion, shoes, books, toys and much more.
