That Perfect Collab - A Good Yarn Book Club

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Ally, the owner of Old Town Books. At the time, she was in a very small pop-up space down on Union Street, but had intentions of expanding into a larger, more permanent space. Ally is one of those people that you immediately click with. She had the energy and excitement that I remember having when I first opened, but I was most impressed with her ability to create community in her store in a way that we had been doing in ours for years. She seemed to understand that she could be a community space for readers in Alexandria, and she set out to create events, clubs, and more that would foster connection among people.

Fast forward a few years, and Old Town Books is now at 130 S. Royal Street in a much larger space. In the fall of this year, she came to me with a book club concept that she hoped I would partner on - A Good Yarn Book Club. She describes it as a group of craft-curious makers that get together every six weeks to listen to an audiobook and unwind via knitting, needlepoint, collage, you name it! It’s genius really. As an avid knitter, I often feel like my knitting time is competing with my reading time. It is certainly hard to read and knit. The idea of an audio book club is such a perfect fit for our shop, so we jumped in! Our first club was a huge success so we are partnering with her for a second session in January. This time, we’ve chosen a yarn project that requires no previous experience! We will also have our amazing tapestry instructor here to get everyone started on their tapestry piece.

Here are the deets for January’s Club and Project:

All levels are welcome for this craft experience!

This month’s club is listening to Kevin Wilson’s new book, Now is Not the Time to Panic. A bold coming-of-age story that follows Frankie, an aspiring writer, and Zeke, a talented artist, as sparks and creativity fly. The two create a poster that begins appearing across their small-town, sending everyone into panic. Twenty years later, Frankie is contacted by a journalist who is writing a story about the Coalfield Panic of 1996. Might she know something?

Where and When to Meet:

The kick-off meeting will occur at fibre space on Sunday, January 8 at 4pm. This is just a kick-off, we’ll meet to discuss the book later in the month! Plan to meet back at Old Town Books from 7-8pm on Sunday, January 29 to discuss the book, to continue working on the kit, and to receive help with your crafting if needed.

How to join:

1. If you haven’t already, join and subscribe to Old Town Book’s page on Libro.fm. You’ll get your first audiobook free!

2. RSVP for our in person meetups here.

3. Order your kit for the craft. Choose from one of two tapestry weaving kits we are offering:

Danielle, owner of the fibre space shop, has been knitting since the age of six or so, when she completed her first project – a Cabbage Patch doll scarf. A Pittsburgh native with a degree in international development, she moved to the D.C. area to find a job and quickly established a career in non profit management and fundraising. For extra cash, she decided to turn her hobby into a job and taught knitting classes in the evening at area shops. With a heavy dose of sarcasm and a tough love style of teaching, Danielle quickly developed a following of students – busy D.C. professionals looking for a creative outlet. In October 2006, she struck out on her own with Knit-a-Gogo, Inc. – offering knitting classes and events all over the D.C. metro area.  Before she knew it, Knit-a-Gogo had grown out of control and Danielle moved to the next natural step – a full service yarn shop. In July 2009 fibre space was born and has been rockin’ ever since. When she isn’t behind the scenes with a mocha in hand, Danielle is hanging with her daughter or lobbying for small business needs at City Hall.
