This Hidden “Jewel” Could Be Yours!
1010 Prince Street #4 offers a rare opportunity to live at The Courts, a coveted 26-unit condo community in the heart of Old Town. Even more special, it’s Alexandria Stylebook member Meaghan Foran’s former condo! Just a short walk from Alx&Co., this light-filled unit is perfectly located to enjoy all that Old Town has to offer while providing a welcoming haven to call home. To best share this condo with you, we asked Meaghan to share what made this house a home:
This was your first home, what drew you to this area?
Tim and I actually rented a unit at The Courts before buying our condo. We had been living there for about two years when this unit went on the market. We weren’t even considering buying a place at that point, but I decided to stop by the open house as a nosey neighbor and ended up falling in love with it. We crunched the numbers and realized we could afford to buy it, and after getting pre-approved (much to my early 20-something surprise), we put in an offer and got it! We loved the layout and the light and especially loved that it was towards the back of the building and away from the busy street. The Courts are such a special place, and we had already gotten to know our neighbors, so it was an easy decision to buy once the right unit came up.
What were your favorite parts about this location?
Walkability. We walk to work, to school, to the grocery, to restaurants. Before moving to the cabin last year, we hardly used our car except to escape for a hike. The Courts are also such a unique, special condo association. It’s very dog-friendly and full of creative types who are genuinely nice. With the shared courtyards, you really get to know your neighbors, which can be unique compared to traditional apartment buildings. We also, amazingly enough, really liked the size of the apartment: it’s perfect for two people, and we even made it work with a child and a dog! We never felt cramped. With the right organization and layout, you can accomplish a lot of living in a small space.
What went into updating the home?
We did most of the work before we moved in. The condo was in good shape, but it needed some love - no updates since the 70s! We completely gutted the bathroom, and we added the wall of closets in the dining room for ample storage. We also added an in-unit washer and dryer and the wood-burning stove. We updated the kitchen a few years ago, too: new cabinets, a smaller dishwasher, and a fridge to fit the space better. It really felt perfect!
Favorite spots in the neighborhood?
Hanks is literally one block away, Misha’s and Mason and Greens are two blocks away, Jennie’s is around the corner, and of course, the most amazing custom jewelers are just six blocks away (wink wink!) But really, the location is ideal. It’s a 15-minute walk to the metro, or you can take the bus into D.C. for the commute, so you are perfectly located for work and play. We love this location so much that we moved only one block away after deciding it was time to expand our footprint a bit. It is bittersweet - we love our new home and feel so lucky to have been able to buy it, but we will miss our sweet first home so much!
Could you make this work? This courtyard-facing unit has no condos above or next to it, an elongated floor plan allows for dedicated living room, dining room, kitchen, and bedroom spaces, as well as the most possible windows and light! Completely updated with new kitchen and marble bathroom, washer and dryer in unit, beautiful hardwood floors, great storage space throughout the condo (lots of custom built-out closets!), and windows in every room. The Courts is a unique community formed by historic townhomes 1006-1016 Prince Street, just one block to the heart of King St., nine blocks to the metro, and a short walk to Old Town Waterfront. The community is connected by rear common area spaces for owners to enjoy. Each unit has dedicated storage space in the building’s basement.
