Upholstery Sale Design Inspiration, Part 2: Regan Billingsley Interiors

Did you all see Madelyn’s foyer light fixture post last week? If not, then read it ASAP. It was brilliant! Not only did we get a sneak peek into her beautiful home, we got a sneak peek into the minds of the talented designers behind Ivy Lane. It was the perfect example of all the things a designer considers when making choices for a room and how they can read your style when you don’t think you have one. If it were just picking pretty things, then just about anyone could do it. But, it’s not.Putting a room together – or just picking one light fixture – is wrought with tough decisions like what pattern or texture and how much, this color or that finish, too tall or too small, and how long or how short? Every piece in a room is related to the other and purposefully placed to make a cohesive statement. That is why hiring a designer is so helpful. To make any sort of statement takes training, intuition, skill, and talent. I promise, it’s way more than just picking pretty things. Though, pretty things are the fun part of design.In part two of our upholstery sale inspiration, Design Collective partner, Regan Billingsley of Regan Billingsley Interiors has thoughtfully designed this beautiful living space for our imaginary client. As each of the four designers has illustrated (or will), there are many ways to take the same three pieces – the Louis sofa from Cisco Brothers, the black side table with drawers, and the Aerin Lauder lamp on top of it – and create an incredible room that is balanced, collected, and indicative of your personality.For me, this room is full of deliberate design decisions. All of the pieces feel natural – the linen fabrics, the caning on the chairs, the wool rug, the brass and alabaster chandelier, the marbleized texture of the lamp, and the wood finish of the coffee table – which makes it cohesive and soothing. She didn’t throw in anything too heavy or artificial because that would throw off the room. As always, the color choices are spot on. That rust color fabric on the sofa plays nicely with the painting but throw in the pillows – especially the custom fabric from Mira Jean Designs – and everything ties together seamlessly. Finally, the brass touches are tidy and spare, making those choices feel deliberate. A chrome fixture would not have worked.This design is well curated, balanced, and beautiful. It feels like it could be at home in Alexandria, Chevy Chase, New York, or L.A., don’t you think?
