Why Interactive Events Matter for Kids—And Why We’re So Excited for July at Pippin Toy Co.

At Pippin Toy Co. in Old Town, we believe childhood should be full of wonder, curiosity, and hands-on fun. That’s why we’re hosting a series of interactive events this July that are designed not only to entertain, but also to engage kids in meaningful, memory-making ways.

Children learn best when they’re having fun. Interactive events like scavenger hunts, reptile encounters, and magic shows offer more than just entertainment—they provide rich, sensory experiences that boost creativity, confidence, and connection. Whether they’re spotting Waldo in shop windows or giggling at a wizard’s goofy tricks, kids are actively participating in their own learning and joy.

Here’s what’s happening at Pippin Toy Co. this month:

🔍 Now through July 31: Where’s Waldo? Scavenger Hunt
This self-paced adventure invites kids and families to search for the famously stripe-clad traveler hidden in local businesses. It’s the perfect way to explore Old Town, stretch those observational skills, and collect stamps on your card (available at Old Town Books JR, official organizer of this fun event). It’s screen-free fun that encourages exploration and discovery.

🦎 July 20 | 11 am – 12 pm: My Reptile Guys
Back by popular demand, this event invites kids to meet ten fascinating reptiles in a safe, friendly environment. From petting scaly new friends to simply watching from a comfortable distance, this petting zoo experience fosters respect for animals and boosts confidence in kids who may be trying something new.

🪄 July 26 | 10:30 am – 11:30 am: Professor Fizzwiffle
Get ready for laughs, gasps, and lots of audience participation! Professor Fizzwiffle is a goofy wizard and award-winning magician who brings big energy and even bigger fun. Expect interactive magic, silly antics, and the kind of joy that fills the room, and stays with you all day.

Each event is thoughtfully designed to encourage connection between kids and their caregivers, between new friends, and with the local community. At Pippin, we’re more than a toy store—we’re a hub for imagination and play, where learning happens naturally and joyfully.

So mark your calendars, invite a friend, and join us for the fun in Old Town! The memories start here.

Owner Amy Rutherford started Red Barn because she wanted to deliver a service — to provide both old and new in one place. No longer will busy shoppers be limited to reproductions or forced to shop multiple flea markets for the look or gifts they want. The trick in blending old and new, vintage and modern, classic and quirky, is balance. And Amy’s knack for mixing rustic antiques with urban chic has created a look that is both fresh and familiar.

Located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, Penny Post is an independent boutique specializing in custom stationery and wedding invitations. Inspired by the art of personal correspondence, the power of handwritten notes, and the smell of freshly printed stationery, we surround ourselves with quirky, hilarious, and classically beautiful things to make life a little brighter.
