American in Paris first opened its doors on Upper King Street in 1996 in Old Town Alexandria; fast becoming an oasis for one-of-a-kind vintage accessories and niche European designers. A second-generation family business now led by Founder & Creative Director Alexandra Alvarez de Toledo, designer, stylist, and wardrobe consultant. Alex sources and produces trend-forward creations along with timeless wardrobe staples suitable for women of all ages. A collective of apparel, accessories, & gifts curated from throughout Alex’s global travels, American In Paris is also the flagship location for the store’s eponymous label designed by Alex.

American in Paris first opened its doors in 1996 in Old Town Alexandria; fast becoming an oasis for one-of-a- kind vintage accessories and niche European designers.
While studying in Paris, Founder & Creative Director Alexandra Alvarez De Toledo’s style was discovered and admired by William Halimi, the CEO of Barbara Bui and the iconic Kabuki boutique. Alex was appointed buyer for Kabuki, helping to choose the collections and consulted on designs for Barbara Bui, jump-starting her career in fashion, styling for fashion shows, films, commercials, and editorials.
Inspired by all the Ateliers showcasing emerging designers in Paris, Alex was determined to bring a similar shopping experience to Northern Virginia, however her styling career was taking off, and when she left the area to pursue costume design full time, Alexandra's mother Joelle Solimano, (who had always shared her love of fashion,) kept American in Paris alive, and transformed it into a local institution.
American In Paris is a collective of apparel, accessories, & gifts curated by Founder & Creative Director Alexandra Alvarez de Toledo from throughout her global travels. It is also the flagship location for our eponymous clothing label designed by Alex.
About the Founder
Alexandra Alvarez de Toledo is a fashion stylist, designer and wardrobe consultant with a passion for culture, social impact and visual storytelling.
She has contributed to memorable red-carpet moments, films, advertising campaigns and fashion editorials. Known for her low-key luxury aesthetic, Alexandra’s styling has been featured within notable publications such as Vogue and L’Officiel and among countless celebrities.
When she’s not traveling the world to find new brands for the store, Alex splits her time between Northern Virginia and New York.
