How to Create Perfect Curls

This post is by Abby Baldonado one of our wonderful Sales Associates at Bellacara. Thank you, Abby!

I know that curls are a delicate subject. They’re unpredictable and can be unruly, but on the occasion where the stars line up and you use the right products, the end result is gorgeous.I am a naturally curly hair gal who just started to really embrace my curls, and I feel like I have finally found the "fountain of curl." I’m pretty sure I’ve tried every product under the sun for my hair. I have bottles that I have bought and never bothered with again because they either made my curls crunchy or greasy - both of which I hate. All I wanted was mermaid worthy curls with minimum frizz (because let’s be honest, summer in Virginia is just a little humid), and no crunch. Well, I have finally found a method that works. Here is my secret:Beautiful curls start in the shower. I use a moisturizing shampoo free of sulfates (which everyone should be using anyway) and a heavy conditioner. Curly hair is notorious for frizz, so a heavy conditioner is what I reach for when I want a good curly hair day. My favorite shampoo and conditioner combo is the Restore line from Living Proof. Bonus, it smells heavenly.   Next, I apply product to soaking wet hair while still in the shower. I’ve had customers (shout out to Dianne!) that towel dry their hair, and then apply product. The result is less than thrilling. Applying product to soaking wet hair produces the best results. I recently wrote an article on scalp health and my love for Oribe’s Serene Scalp Soothing Leave-In Treatment, which treats my scalp while giving me some volume. So, on soaking wet hair, I apply the Oribe Scalp Treatment, then I use the Bumble and Bumble Curl Style Primer throughout my hair.   I wrap my hair up in the Aquis Original Turban for about 20 minutes while I do the rest of my routine. I then let my hair air dry and proceed to have the best curls of my life. Not crunchy, minimum frizz, and beautiful volume. I cannot tell you how grateful I am to have finally found a curly hair method that works. Also, if you’re anything like me and only wash your hair a few times a week, you’ll likely want a good curl refresher spray. My favorite is the Oribe Wave and Shine Spray.
