20 Years Of Renovating Alexandria

If you've ever wandered down by the Old Town waterfront, there's a good chance you've walked by our showroom on South Union Street. We are Marks-Woods Construction Services, a full-service design-build company specializing in high-end home renovations and additions. We are a one-stop shop for home renovation projects, meaning we handle everything from architectural and interior design to project management and construction for all our projects.

We have been working in the Alexandria community for nearly 20 years now, but this marks our first post with Alexandria Stylebook! During these past 20 years, we've learned a lot about working in Alexandria and this community we call home. Here are three things that make renovating in Alexandria so unique:

Alexandria Has The Board Of Architectural Review

If you live in a historic portion of the City of Alexandria, there's a good chance you've heard of the Board of Architectural Review (BAR). This committee is dedicated to maintaining the visual integrity of one of the most beautiful historic cities in the country. And there are decades of rules and regulations that the committee abides by. Working with a design-build firm or general contractor familiar with the process of BAR approval will save you a lot of time, money, and headaches. We've done dozens of projects that have gone through the BAR process and even won the National Association of the Remodeling Industry's 2020 award for best historic renovation in the entire Mid-Atlantic region!

Alexandria Homeowners Have Style

One of our favorite things about working with homeowners in Alexandria is that there isn't a one-size-fits-all style. We have clients transforming traditional kitchens into modern marvels, clients requesting hidden doors and secret passageways, and even a client asking for their own full-size indoor volleyball/basketball court for their kids. This is a creative community, and we love the challenges our clients give us to continue to think outside the box.

Alexandria Is A Great Place To Be Inspired

Whether you are walking along the George Washington Parkway trail, jogging the hills of Rosemont, or meandering through Old Town, there is always so much to see when it comes to visual inspiration. Turn off your music and just look around - you'll find unique and interesting architecture everywhere. Love a house that's for sale? Head to the listing page or open house and see what they did inside their home. Inspired by character and charm? Take a historic homes tour. See a Marks-Woods sign in front of your neighbor's house? Ask them for a tour of their project, or better yet, give us a call, and we can show you before and after photos to give you an idea of the work being done.

So next time you are down by the waterfront, stop into our showroom. One of our in-house interior designers can walk you through the first steps in getting your home renovation project underway. Can't wait until then? Just give us a call, and we can set up a time to walk through your home and talk ideas and strategies to get started!
