A Beautiful Aquamarine Redesign Story

March babies, happy birthday! We are honoring this month's birthstone with a beautiful design story featuring a lovely aquamarine. Read on for our client's touching inspiration behind her new aquamarine redesign...

When our client first visited us, she brought along a pretty oval aquamarine ring set in a rather classic ring setting. Our client - a creative in her own right - loved this ring for sentimental reasons but found the original setting too traditional for her taste. The ring had a strong connection to her mother, who had passed away a little over a year before and had sat unworn while our client sorted out her mother's belongings, closed accounts, and tried to organize her life in grief. Our client finally felt ready to repurpose the ring into something she could wear every day as a token of remembrance to her mother. Having been through a similar traumatic loss with my own mother-in-law a few years ago, I fully appreciated the importance of this piece and what it would mean to our client to have it be perfect.

Our client had a few competing objectives for the design: she wanted something low-key and wearable every day, but she also wanted something with a lot of design presence. She wanted a style that would powerfully honor her mother's memory and steered clear of ideas that were too dainty or delicate. One idea was to do a modified cigar band, but we felt it was a bit too blocky. Finally, we landed on the idea of doing a modified Bvlgari Bombe-style ring, which would accomplish the goals of a big look that was neither fussy nor overwhelming: perfect for everyday wear.

Our client opted for a flatter profile than the signature curved top, but we kept the fluid lines and high-polish detailing. Using our in-house grower, we created a resin mold of the ring first to test the fit of the aquamarine within the setting, and then, once we confirmed that we had the dimensions just right, we cast the ring and set it in-house. The end result is just stunning, and we're totally taken by this concept. Best of all, our client loved the end result, and we are so pleased she has a ring she can wear each day, in memory of her beloved mother. Truly, it's projects like these that we love the most!

Creative Director & Co-Owner | Alexandria and Company

I came to join Alexandria & Company by way of love: my husband Tim has owned the shop for nearly ten years, and I started by helping him on Saturdays so that we could spend more time together. Eventually, I quit my other life in the legal field to become Alx&Co’s Creative Director and co-owner with Tim. Now, we run our small business together in Old Town and I haven't looked back.

Alexandria & Company is an Old Town-based workshop and design studio specializing in creating and restoring fine jewelry and silver hollowware. They are the in-the-know jewelers of Alexandria and have been serving clients out of their small workshop for decades. Tucked in their historic building on South Royal Street, the team at Alx&Co. brings a personalized, modern approach to their craft – this is not your average stodgy jeweler or antique shop. Visit them online to view their collection of handmade fine jewelry; or, if you’re feeling creative, make an appointment to talk about that custom design project you’ve been imagining.
