Adding Warmth To Your Home With DIY Tapestry

While most people think of sweaters, hats, and scarves when they think of a yarn shop, we are seeing an increasing number of folks coming in to get materials to make their own special home decor. The pandemic brought many of us into our homes for more hours a day than ever before, and we began to rethink the spaces that we were spending time in, seeking to make them more cozy and comforting. (I personally started to collect house plants.) Macrame, knit and crochet blankets, and tapestry wall hangings are all having their moment in home decor trends right now, and I am here for it. Decor made of yarn and rope can really add warmth to your home as well as add new texture. Creating something with your own hands really adds a personal touch and can be a real topic of conversation too!

We are so excited to have partnered with Living Fibers and owner artist Mariana Baertl to bring in some gorgeous tapestry weaving kits to fibre space. Mariana Baertl is a Peruvian fiber artist specializing in embroidered and woven pieces for home decor. Our Living Fibers weaving kit includes an artist-curated pack of fiber plus a flat pop-out weaving loom. Everything that is needed to make a small tapestry is included in the kit, and a complete newbie can take on this project! These kits have a combination of 200 grams of natural fibers, including cotton rope, linen ribbon, wool, and ribbons. The kits come with a code to access digital video tutorials on how to weave! Even with basic weaving skills, these kits can make an absolutely gorgeous finished piece since the materials in them are so stunning.

This tapestry is almost complete and was made with two kits on a larger loom using only three of the most common weaving techniques! It’s ready to come off the loom and be put on a wooden dowel or even a tree branch, depending on the vibe you want in your home. This one will live at our shop in the new second-floor lounge area.

Danielle, owner of the fibre space shop, has been knitting since the age of six or so, when she completed her first project – a Cabbage Patch doll scarf. A Pittsburgh native with a degree in international development, she moved to the D.C. area to find a job and quickly established a career in non profit management and fundraising. For extra cash, she decided to turn her hobby into a job and taught knitting classes in the evening at area shops. With a heavy dose of sarcasm and a tough love style of teaching, Danielle quickly developed a following of students – busy D.C. professionals looking for a creative outlet. In October 2006, she struck out on her own with Knit-a-Gogo, Inc. – offering knitting classes and events all over the D.C. metro area.  Before she knew it, Knit-a-Gogo had grown out of control and Danielle moved to the next natural step – a full service yarn shop. In July 2009 fibre space was born and has been rockin’ ever since. When she isn’t behind the scenes with a mocha in hand, Danielle is hanging with her daughter or lobbying for small business needs at City Hall.
