The Fitness Goal Killer No One Talks About
My intake process for a new member is relatively rigorous. Not only am I providing a glimpse inside my method, but I have to also ensure the candidate is mentally ready for our program.
Most women come to me with similar reasons for why they “can’t” have “that body” and “that fitness” – I hear all about lack of time, dwindling energy, too many plates in the air, menopause, or not knowing what to do.
I’m here to tell you: The biggest obstacle standing between you and your fitness goals is, for men as well as women, NOT any of the above reasons.
After more than two decades of coaching men and women how to feel good in their bodies, I have a different solution for how to get where you want to be…and reveal the fitness goal killer that no one (no one!) is really talking about.
Killer Distractions Stand In The Way
We live in a world that constantly competes for our attention. Our new wellness habits don’t go far because one distraction competes with another, time and time again, before we give up and resort to old ways.
I know it's not because you don't care about your health and fitness!
I simply know that distraction just just wins, every time.
I’ve seen it time and time again, and I’ve done the research. The statistics are staggering: An average worker switches tasks every few minutes, toggles between apps and websites more than 1,000 times a day, and can take up to 25 minutes to fully regain focus after an interruption.
If we're constantly being pulled in different directions, constantly being “distracted”, is it any wonder our wellness habits are often the first thing to disappear?
Summer only magnifies the distractions. For many, kids are home, vacations interrupt routines, family visits are crammed onto the calendar, and work demands don’t fade while everything else piles up. Training sessions get pushed to tomorrow. Then tomorrow becomes next week, next week becomes next month, and…you get it.
I've also seen every diet, every supplement, and every fitness trend come and go. Pile these quick-fixes onto the “distractions” that we experience on a seasonal basis, and it’s a regular ticking time bomb of feeling like you’ve failed on fitness goals. No good.
So how do you stay consistent in a distracted world?
Accountability is the Answer
My answer is accountability.
Whether it's a walking buddy, a workout partner, a fellow early morning riser, meal planning with a family member, or someone who simply checks in on your goals, accountability removes daily negotiations with yourself.
When someone else expects you to show up, that simple commitment makes it so much easier to follow through on any goal.
For that reason, I have built accountability into every one of my programs, and I've seen firsthand how powerful an external source of support can truly be. Even I have a handful of accountability partners!
One of them is Warren. We have a standing workout at the famous and extensive Exorcist Steps in Georgetown, every Sunday morning at 7am.
Our Sunday morning session is the same every week: Sprint up the 75 steps, descend, do 10 pull ups, swing a 79-kettlebell 10 times, and repeat–for ten rounds!
Yes, there are plenty of Sundays I don't feel like tackling those steps and his silly programming around it, yet, knowing Warren is counting on me gets me to the base of those steps. I’ve even convinced our daughter Rachel to join me next weekend!
An added benefit of my friendship with Warren is we now rely on each other for that extra push. Wherever - I mean whenever - we see each other at our gym, we will pull out the battling ropes and complete three rounds of thirty seconds with the heaviest set. Why? Because we can! We both dig the accountability that pushes us to be our best.
Rely on the Strength of Others
When you add accountability, suddenly any “distractions” that pull you out-of-focus become excuses, and the steps you need to get to your end result become more clear.
This is another one of the foundations of my program: stop relying on motivation and start building tiny habits.
This month, I challenge you to treat your wellness like the most important appointment on your calendar. Protect it. Find someone to help you keep it. Then show up.
The rewards aren't just fitting into your favorite jeans. They're better sleep, more energy, improved resilience, a better mood, a stronger immune system, longevity, and the confidence that comes from knowing your body can do hard things.
