Charlotte’s Courage: How One Alexandria Student is Fighting Back Against Cancer
One of the things I love most about living in this community is how people come together for one another, especially when it matters most. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of photographing so many wonderful families, watching their children grow up and become incredible young adults who are already making a difference in the world.
Recently, I was reminded of just how powerful that spirit of community can be through a young woman named Charlotte Torborg.
Charlotte is part of a team called Saints Save Lives, and she is participating in the Student Visionaries of the Year fundraising campaign with Blood Cancer United. This initiative empowers students to raise awareness and funds for research, patient support, and life-saving treatments for those battling blood cancers.
Charlotte’s motivation is deeply personal.
She has witnessed firsthand how cancer impacts families and loved ones. Last year, her brother bravely battled (and beat!!) cancer. While his victory is something their family celebrates, the experience also opened Charlotte’s eyes to the difficult journey so many people face.
“I have watched too many people around me fight against various types of cancer, specifically my brother who beat cancer last year,” Charlotte said. “I've watched how hard it is not only on the person themselves, but also on the people they hold close to their heart. I can say, without a doubt, that everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer, and to me, that is heartbreaking.”
Instead of feeling helpless, Charlotte decided to take action.
As a Student Visionary, she and her team are working to raise funds and awareness to help create a future where fewer families have to experience the pain and uncertainty that comes with a cancer diagnosis.
Charlotte’s story is a powerful reminder that age doesn’t determine impact. Young people in our community are stepping up in extraordinary ways: leading fundraisers, building teams, and working together to support those who need it most.
I’ve had the joy of photographing Charlotte’s family and many of the families connected to this effort over the years. Watching these kids grow up and become compassionate leaders has been truly inspiring.
Charlotte and her team are proof that the next generation is already leading the way.
And when young people like Charlotte decide to fight for a world without cancer, it gives all of us a reason to believe in what’s possible. Support her work here.
