Details Matter, Even on Your Feet!

One of my favorite items to knit are socks. I almost always have a sock project on needles and with me. They are small and fit in most purses. Many of the patterns are easy to memorize and work on without paying much attention. And lastly, but most importantly, hand knit socks are gorgeous additions to your wardrobe. Despite being way down there on your feet, they can really elevate an outfit and even bring attention to a well detailed pair of shoes. I recently went over to The Shoe Hive to see what shoes they have right now that would pair well with my growing collection of hand knit socks. What I was really looking for were shoes with some amazing little details, and The Shoe Hive did not disappoint. Some of my favorite shoe brands are Veronica Beard, AGL, and Paul Green because of the attention to detail in their pieces. Here are a few of my finds:

Shoes: Dacey by Veronica BeardSocks: Manayunk Socks pattern by Lori Gayle made with Manos del Uruguay Alegria

These shoes feature brass studs and a gorgeous pecan suede, and the style shows off the texture and gorgeous heel in this sock pattern.

Shoes: Running Sole by Golden GooseSocks: Mondawmin Socks pattern by Corinne Walcher made with Neighborhood Fiber Co. Studio Sock

I am really itching for a pair of Golden Goose sneaks. This pair has just a little bit of color on the tongue and lots of sparkle on the shoe! It’s a great pair for showing off the bright color of these socks.

Shoes: Ivie by AquataliaSocks: Brenda’s Basic Toe Up Sock Pattern in Havirland Pax Sport

The thick squishy leather straps on these sandals make them incredibly comfy to wear. Add a pair of loud striped socks, and they are perfect for both lounging around the house or walking in the neighborhood on a chilly spring night.

Shoes: D938001 Sneaker by AGLSocks: So Simple Sport Socks pattern by Glenna C. made in the Periwinkle Sheep Sport Wolle

The details in this snakeskin shoe are just gorgeous and are a wonderful pairing with the color in this handknit sock. They’d be equally as beautiful with a yellow or charcoal grey sock.

Shoes: Harper Sneaker by Paul GreenSocks: Brenda’s Basic Toe Up Sock Pattern worked in Knitterly Things Vesper Sock

EEK! Where do I start with these shoes?! I was sold at the side zipper, but the stripe of color around the shoe is a subtle but stunning detail that really makes these shine. I love these with our custom color from Vesper yarns - “Across the Yarniverse."

Shoes: Hartley by Veronica BeardSocks: Rivendell pattern by Janel Laidman worked in Hazel Knits Blueprint

This sneaker has just a touch of snakeskin print on the heel and beautiful suede and leather details. It’s a great neutral color to pair with spring-inspired sock colors like this bright beachgrass shade.

Shoes: Kyleigh by AquataliaSocks: “How I make my socks” pattern by Susan B. Anderson in Miss Babs Putnum

The details on the heels of these flats are everything! I love these shoes with slouched hand knits socks and a cropped denim or khaki for spring.

If you have been inspired to make your own socks but don’t have the skills, check out our favorite sock making book here at fibre space And if you are a total beginner to knitting, be sure to get into one of our introduction courses first! Socks are a great third or fourth project, but you will want to master knitting and purling flat and then working in the round before you take on this project.

Danielle, owner of the fibre space shop, has been knitting since the age of six or so, when she completed her first project – a Cabbage Patch doll scarf. A Pittsburgh native with a degree in international development, she moved to the D.C. area to find a job and quickly established a career in non profit management and fundraising. For extra cash, she decided to turn her hobby into a job and taught knitting classes in the evening at area shops. With a heavy dose of sarcasm and a tough love style of teaching, Danielle quickly developed a following of students – busy D.C. professionals looking for a creative outlet. In October 2006, she struck out on her own with Knit-a-Gogo, Inc. – offering knitting classes and events all over the D.C. metro area.  Before she knew it, Knit-a-Gogo had grown out of control and Danielle moved to the next natural step – a full service yarn shop. In July 2009 fibre space was born and has been rockin’ ever since. When she isn’t behind the scenes with a mocha in hand, Danielle is hanging with her daughter or lobbying for small business needs at City Hall.
