Milestones in the Maine Light

Sunday night, Maria and I head north to Maine.

I’m thrilled to be returning to Artemis Gallery in Northeast Harbor for a group exhibition opening July 31, running through August 12. These shows never feel routine. They’re milestones…checkpoints in my ongoing creative journey.

The first time I met the owner Dee I was in Maine painting at the Wolf and really feeling like at that point I had something to offer in terms of my Artistic exploration. I had sold quite well at Thom. Moser that previous winter and reached out to Dee with some of the darkest paintings I'd ever completed. To this day it amazes me that other people out there like the dark as much as I do!

Maine is very protective of their Artists and some galleries will only represent you if you live in Maine. I understand that thought, but I was really hoping that my connection with Maine was either strong enough, or the work would be too good to pass up. I wish I could bottle up and preserve the feeling I had driving home knowing that I had a show the following summer. Truly special and I appreciate everything Dee and her team has done for me over the years.

This Year’s Show

At my first Artemis show, Dee paired me with David Graeme Baker. Talk about getting thrown into the deep end. His work is on a whole other level—figurative, emotional, and deeply human. I’ve admired him ever since, and I’m excited to share the walls with him again this year.

SG & Parrish by David Graeme Baker

David Graeme Baker distills Maine’s woods and quiet corners into moody, masterful compositions.

Artists also joining us:

Ten Star Buck Bobby Haskell

Bobby Haskell's current work incorporates habitat for plants and animals into sculpture installations.

Stacks by Patricia Ingersoll

Patricia Ingersoll brings bold color and movement—her paintings pulse with the light and heat of island summers.

"The Sky Remembers" by Don Ripper, Oil and Silver leaf on panel 30" x 36"

And for my part this show caps off an intense period of painting, revising, scrapping, restarting, and pushing deeper.

The gallery will be full of summer light, fresh work, and good company. Artemis is more than a space, it’s a bridge between artist and landscape, between realism and abstraction. This show reflects that beautifully.

I hope you’ll join us for the opening reception. The first drink’s on me! Come celebrate, connect, and maybe walk away with something that lingers. Something quiet but lasting, like the tide pulling back.
