The Art of Arriving with Flowers
As the weather gets colder and evenings move indoors, it’s officially dinner party season. There’s something especially lovely about gathering around a friend’s table this time of year—and a thoughtful hostess gift is a small way to acknowledge everything that goes into welcoming you.
If you ask, “What can I bring?” and your host replies, “Just yourself,” that usually means the food is covered. It’s your cue to enjoy the evening without adding another dish to the menu. But we still believe in arriving with a little something to say thank you.
A bottle of wine is a classic choice. A favorite honey, beautiful jam, or excellent olive oil makes a lovely gift for the host to enjoy later. And, of course, at Helen Olivia, we’re partial to flowers.
If flowers are your gift of choice, there are a few steadfast rules to keep in mind.
Keep fragrance to a minimum.
Flowers should complement the evening, and a heavy fragrance can overwhelm a room—especially when everyone is sitting down to dinner. Lilies are best avoided unless you know they’re a particular favorite of your host.
Always bring flowers that are already arranged.
A wrapped bouquet is beautiful, but it also hands your host a task: find a vase, trim the stems, arrange the flowers, and clean up—all while greeting guests and finishing dinner.
Instead, bring flowers arranged in a vase, ready to set down and enjoy. The intention is to make your host feel appreciated, and a gift that requires no extra work does exactly that.
Choose a size that’s easy to place.
A modest arrangement gives your host plenty of options. It can brighten an entryway, a coffee table, or a bedside table without requiring furniture to be rearranged. Something compact and thoughtfully designed often makes the most gracious gift.
Let your host decide where it goes.
Your host may already have flowers, candles, or a particular vision for the dinner table. Give your arrangement without expecting it to become the centerpiece. It’s a gift for their home, and part of its pleasure may be enjoying it the next morning, after the dishes are done and the guests have gone.
The best hostess gifts share one quality: they’re easy to receive. Choose flowers that are ready to enjoy, offer them with a warm thank-you, and let your host get back to the lovely evening they’ve planned.
