The Three “It” Houseplants You Need To Own

In the world of all things botanical, there are flower people and there are plant people. I definitely fall in the “flower people” column, but from time to time I creep on what the plant people are doing. It’s an entire subculture on Instagram (seriously- have you checked out the hashtags #indoorjungle or #foliagefanatic?), and the plant people are fanatical. They take the best pictures, and share all the tips and tricks for plant care and curating a collection in your home.

So, from time to time, I go down the rabbit hole on Instagram and see what’s new and trendy in the plant world. And, having just done this, I thought I’d share the new “it” plants that we all need in our lives.

ZZ Plant

The ZZ Plant got its name because people like you and I couldn’t possibly pronounce Zamioculcas zamiifolia. It’s obvious why this plant is one of the hottest plants right now. ZZ plants have gorgeous vertical glossy green leaves and are incredibly tolerant of almost all conditions. I feel ZZ plants tend to lean a little more modern or eclectic, so I’d envision this plant in a home of that style.

The Bird of Paradise Plant

Also known by its scientific name, Strelitzia, this plant is popping up everywhere: from Instagram to the pages of Architectural Digest. Everyone wants to get their hands on one. Birds of Paradise are similar in size to fiddle leaf figs (think big tree sized plant in the corner of your room) and love a sunny spot.

Trailing Philodendron

If there’s one plant we keep getting calls for, it’s the silk philodendron. Funky, variegated leaves are all the rage lately, as are plants that trail. If you’ve ever wanted to create one of those Instagram-worthy plant moments where the leaves trail down a bookcase: this is the plant for you. In addition to being just plain cool looking, these plants are pretty tolerant to watering issues and a swath of lighting conditions. (i.e., if you kill everything in your home, this might be a good option for you).

And, in an effort to stay hip and cool in the plant arena, we’ve updated our plant offerings for the summer to include some of these beauties. Cheers to a botanical summer, friends!
