It’s Not Goodbye, It’s See You Around
To our amazing Old Town Community:
Over a year and a half ago, I took over American In Paris after my mom’s passing. She and I first opened the store together in 1996, and when my career took off, she took the reins (moms, right?). I’d source items throughout my global travels as a stylist, and I’d work with her on trends. But American In Paris became known as Joelle’s store.
Taking on the challenge of running the business without the woman who built its reputation was insurmountable. But with the right team, and eventually the connection from the community, we evolved it into its next iteration. We updated our inventory, bringing in more hybrid options, streetwear for the everyday woman, unique discoveries from South America (a favorite destination of mine for under-the-radar brands), and eventually launching our Bespoke Services. This, for me, was the cherry on top of the cake. As a costume designer, it has been my duty to create—not just style—clothing to fit the talent I’m working with. To dream up characters, and envelop them in fabric and texture that brings that character to life? That is the essence of American In Paris Bespoke, to bring a relatable, custom experience, to the women of the DMV. And I am so proud that we were able to offer a glimpse of it.
Alas, after almost 30 years, it’s time to shut the doors at 1225 King Street. Our property is on the market, and after much deliberation, we felt we had outgrown our space, so we decided not to pursue buying it. Our last day in the store will be February 17. After that we’ll be hosting a series of popup events in Old Town and beyond, while we work on the vision for AIP 2.0 and keep our eyes open for a new space to call home.
It was hard to let go of the space—a space that belonged to my mom, a destination for women on the search for style, and a place we have worked so hard to build up as a joyful, high energy, community-oriented space for our customers, partners, and friends. Thank you to all of Stylebook’s contributors and fellow small businesses, you embraced us with open arms. To the customers that we’ve clinked glasses with, you are truly the reason for our existence.
Until February 17, American in Paris will hold a closing sale with significant reductions on inventory we won’t be taking on the road with us. We will also be hosting a “Fill Your Bag” shopping event as we near our closure. Details and updates will be sent out via email or on our Instagram.
We’d love to stay in touch on both platforms (or talk about any collab ideas!).
And don’t worry— we’ll still be offering ‘the boots.’
Love,
Alex & the entire team at AIP
