King Street Commons: A More Intimate Office Sharing Space in Old Town
As the managing editor for Alexandria Stylebook, I meet with a lot of local business owners to discuss branding and marketing. Something that often comes up: retail and office space in Old Town. This shifts more than you’d think. I’ve personally been part of the hybrid work transformation, having last worked in a D.C. office building in 2020, and have been primarily remote ever since. A common thread I hear and even feel myself: there is no divide between home and work – when you work from home. You often work longer hours, or wander back to your computer and notes because they’re right there…and if you can just cross one more thing off your list. Of course, you can’t “shut it off,” because entrepreneurs rarely do.
People also miss people, and dressing up. Sure athleisure wear is great and more comfortable, but it also feels nice to wear a blouse, pants and shoes that aren’t going for a run.
When Britt Patterson shared an office-sharing space on S. Asaph Street, I stopped by to check it out. A few doors down from Wine Gallery 108, and across the street from Tatte Bakery & Cafe, King Street Commons is located in the center of Old Town. There’s a large parking lot half a block away and it’s within walking distance to so much – including Capo Italian Deli and soon to open Madame Coco’s Emporium. There’s also a place near the back entrance to store bikes if you like riding to work and around town.
King Street Commons has 10 private office suites and seven are now available for rent. There’s a large conference room facing S. Asaph Street when you walk in, and a kitchen area located close by. There are two “phone booth” spaces – but much larger than a phone booth to take private calls. Wide hallways lead to the individual offices with glass windows. It smells clean, the paint is fresh and the vibe is modern. The main door is kept locked and visitors will need to be buzzed in.
What I noticed immediately – it’s a quiet, more private office environment. Last spring, I had a key pass to WeWork in Navy Yard when I previously worked for the D.C. Defenders. While it was definitely a cool, convenient and vibrant space, it was also super distracting. There was a bit too much going on. It was great for team meetings, but it was hard to get actual work done.
