Montana Sapphires

The Montana Sapphire, a unique and astonishing stone that, in recent years, has started to gain more attention due to the coloration in its natural state. One of the only precious stones mined here in the U.S., it is found in three major parts of the western half of the state. Montana has some of the most stunning sapphires that come in a variety of diverse colors making it the top state to produce these types of stones throughout the country.  Sapphires were first found in Montana in 1865, which became the first sapphires found in the United States that were of gem-quality! These stones have become more and more popular in recent years because they are not usually found in the generic bold colors that sapphires are known for. These stones are commonly seen in a lighter green-blue earthy tone, and due to people wanting more natural and “untouched” stones, these beautiful colors are becoming more sought after.   The natural color of these stones can be changed through heat-treating by heating sapphires to near the melting point to improve color and clarity. Both treated and untreated are treasures from Montana, the Treasure State. However, I find the stones to be most beautiful in their natural and uncured state.  The Mystique team recently did a custom ring for a client featuring a breathtaking Montana Sapphire. The details on the ring complemented the natural beauty of the stone, with an homage to the extraordinary landscapes of Montana. We were thrilled to be able to work with a Montana Sapphire and display it in the best way possible while bringing our client’s vision to fruition. Custom designs are one of Mystique’s specialties, so it is always a pleasure when we can work with such an amazing stone as well.
