Tips for Organizing a Play Space

Balancing keeping toys neat while still accessible to kids is always a struggle!  As professional organizers and moms, the team at Neat Method has tips and tricks to keep your kids' play spaces neat and tidy for years to come.

1.  Keep it simple:  Creating broad categories will not only make setting up the system easier, but it will also make cleanup a breeze.  For example, creating one bin for "Vehicles" is a lot easier to maintain than four separate bins for a variety of vehicle categories.

2.  Implement a Cubby System: Open bins and easy to reach in cubbies make it easy for even the littlest of helpers to handle clean up time. Label bins with pictures to help early readers!

3.  Decant games and puzzles:  Ditch the cardboard boxes that easily rip and do not withstand wear and tear, and stash board games in zipper pouches. As an added bonus, this system makes it easy to grab for taking on a trip!

4.  Use floor baskets:  A large basket on the floor is great for corralling larger items, such as stuffed animals and big toys.

5.  Edit Regularly:  We have a rule in my house that prior to a birthday or holiday, we need to have a good edit session. Depending on your child's age, they may need a bit of guidance, but the more you can involve kids in the editing process, the more they will understand the importance of it!

As the natural-born organizer of kids’ spaces, Lauren is already passing this trait onto her sweet daughter. Born in Pennsylvania, graduated from James Madison University, and has called NOVA home for almost 20 years. A broadcast journalism major who has worked in television, restaurants, and marketing. Met and married her husband on New Year’s Eve and loves celebrating with lots of sparkle. A weakness for shoes, coffee, wine, and travel, she is usually working on planning her next trip or making a list (of her lists)! You can often find this multi-tasking gal out for a run, volunteering in the community, or enjoying wine with friends.
