New Year, New Hair

New year, new you – so why not try a new hairstyle? While all things are “new” in January, make your mane the main attraction in 2023. So many people use their hair as a sort of “security blanket,” and are fearful of cutting off length, but there is no better time than the New Year to make an intentional change. I have always felt that changing your hair truly releases you from the daily grind. Changing your hair can instantly spice up your life and release you from the past.

There are three cuts that I am fiercely excited about for 2023. The “bixie,” octopus, and butterfly cuts have caught my attention, and I know they will intrigue you, too. A fresh cut can be the vehicle to start the change that you are wanting to create in yourself. A fresh cut equals a fresh start in my book!

The “bixie” cut is a combination of a bob cut and a pixie. It’s shorter than a bob, but longer than a pixie, and keeps your hair off of your neck and mid-face. The bob element of this cut gives you versatility, while the pixie aspect creates fullness. Marrying these two iconic styles really gives creative freedom to your stylist to customize a look that will best compliment your face and personal style. This haircut can help you redefine yourself and give you a fresh start in 2023.

Next up, the octopus cut. The best way to describe this look is the Rachel cut from the 90’s, with a modern twist. The shape of this cut resembles a classic shag and illuminates the fine line where grunge and glamor connect. Wispy bangs and top-heavy layers blend perfectly with the chopped length at the bottom. The key to achieving this look is to keep the ends long to mirror the legs of an octopus. This cut is a unique hair transformation that nods to the 90s, but is spot on for 2023.

We all know that butterflies symbolize transformation and joy. Its dance reflects the need for movement to our next phase of being. The butterfly cut reflects transformation, movement, and the beauty of an exquisite butterfly. This layered cut gives a feathered look that resembles the wings of a butterfly. If you are growing your hair out, then this look allows you to do so intentionally, in a more stylized way. If you don't want to completely commit to the butterfly cut, then you can just have your stylist “butterfly” your bangs. If you long for short hair, but just can’t commit to the big chop, this cut will give your hair the illusion of shorter hair. It’s the perfect compromise that will still give you the look of a massive change. Of all the cuts on my 2023 list, the butterfly cut is by far the most versatile, and is customizable for your facial features. This very layered, shaggy, face-framing cut winks at the iconic Farrah Fawcett, but also feels very current and fun.

People long for change in the new year and the start of a new season is the perfect time to channel change in every way, including your hair. Starting with a hair transformation may be just what you need to get the new you started. A new haircut can reveal so much about your personality without having to say a word.
