Design Highlights Of 2022

What a year! At Alx&Co., we had the privilege of working on more custom and bespoke design projects than ever, and we can't thank you enough for trusting us with your most precious pieces of art. As client-driven designers, we feel that our designs reflect the thoughtful aesthetics of our clients, but there are certain projects that are especially beautiful in our minds. Here are our top five design highlights of 2022, if you're curious to see what we loved most.

Kalle's Ruby Redesign

We ran a post about this gorgeous bracelet back in September, but it honestly never gets old. This project really encompasses everything we love about jewelry design – repurposing beautiful pieces into something unique, meaningful, and breathtaking. This bracelet design was also tricky to achieve from a technical perspective, so we feel especially proud of how it turned out.

Stacie's Sapphire Milestone Ring

Our client came to us hoping to design a ring that would celebrate the birth of her son in a creative and interesting way. The baby's name and her husband's name both begin with the letter “D,” so she and Tim came up with a subtle way to reference the initial (if you look carefully, you'll see it) and set the design with a custom-sourced orange Montana sapphire and diamonds. The design is the definition of cool, if you ask us!

Jess's Rose Cut Diamond Engagement Ring

Have you ever heard of rose cut diamonds? Many people haven't, but these under-appreciated cuts are simply gorgeous, once you get to know them. Our client first worked with us to design a  gorgeous green sapphire and diamond engagement ring for her girlfriend, and once that was completed, we turned to creating her ring. She had a very general idea of what she liked – something unique and set with a cool center stone – so, we sourced a creative array of colors and options for her to pick from. We settled on this gorgeous trillion-shaped rose cut diamond, and opted for an offset bezel setting that feels both zen and intriguing. I love pieces that utilize lesser-known cuts and styles, and this one in particular was just stunning in its finished state.

Steven's Heirloom Ballerina Ring

This drop-dead gorgeous ring was designed around our client's heirloom round diamond, and uses Alx&Co. tapered diamond baguettes to complete the look. Our clients wanted a ballerina-style ring with plenty of impact and, truly, Tim nailed it. We love the warm yellow and gold tones, the delicate lines of the setting, and the gentle wave that the shape holds around the center stone. It’s simply amazing.

Eric & Donovan's Wedding Bands

I wrote about Eric & Donovan's gorgeous engagement story back in October, but I don't think I fully gushed enough about how much I loved these rings. Eric originally visited us with his mother's treasured engagement ring in hand, with permission to reset the ring into a custom design of his own. He and his partner Donovan knew that they wanted matching bands that would feel decidedly masculine, but also decidedly sparkly. We talked through ways of integrating his mother's diamonds into the design, and came up with this striking channel-set concept that uses a mixture of his heirloom diamonds and newly-sourced diamonds. The end result is just stunning, but we especially love it for its meaningful story of using materials that came from Eric's mother. It truly doesn't get any better than that!

Creative Director & Co-Owner | Alexandria and Company

I came to join Alexandria & Company by way of love: my husband Tim has owned the shop for nearly ten years, and I started by helping him on Saturdays so that we could spend more time together. Eventually, I quit my other life in the legal field to become Alx&Co’s Creative Director and co-owner with Tim. Now, we run our small business together in Old Town and I haven't looked back.

Alexandria & Company is an Old Town-based workshop and design studio specializing in creating and restoring fine jewelry and silver hollowware. They are the in-the-know jewelers of Alexandria and have been serving clients out of their small workshop for decades. Tucked in their historic building on South Royal Street, the team at Alx&Co. brings a personalized, modern approach to their craft – this is not your average stodgy jeweler or antique shop. Visit them online to view their collection of handmade fine jewelry; or, if you’re feeling creative, make an appointment to talk about that custom design project you’ve been imagining.
