Love Acknowledged

Do you know the history behind Mother’s Day? The celebration of mothers started several centuries ago and remains an important date in the calendar today. The Greeks celebrated their goddess, Rhea, considered Mother of the Gods, and the Romans honored their Mother goddess, Cybele.

Since the 16th century, Christianity featured Mothering Sunday on their calendar, which wasn’t necessarily a celebration of motherhood but rather a day when people returned to their “Mother” church for a special service. Our tradition of Mother’s Day gifting came from children picking flowers on their way to church and giving them to their mothers. The Enchanted Florist and Helen Olivia Flowers know all too well that flower delivery is considered the go-to gift for Mother’s Day!

Here in the States, the idea started when Anna Jarvis held a memorial service for her mother on May 12, 1907. Americans began observing this day and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday on the second Sunday in May.

You don’t need to have given birth to gain recognition on this special day. Mothers include foster moms, aunties, sisters; any woman who raised you as a kid and stuck by you as a moody teenager.

I won’t say the word, but the events of 2020 shook our culture. We’ve changed the way we work, the way we connect, and refocused our priorities including travel and experiences. Why not gift the special woman in your life or yourself an experience at Patina? Please join us for our first book signing featuring Linda Jane Holden author of, “Bunny Mellon Style” and “The Gardens of Bunny Mellon”. Click here to register for this exciting event. If we hear from you today or tomorrow, we will email a printable invite for you to give to that special person on Sunday.

Patina Polished Living was created 10 years ago by friends Amanda Mertins and Kimberly Weiler.

Amanda Mertins was born in Ohio and graduated the University of Maryland with a degree in Economics. She started moving and editing furniture and accessories while in grade school and hasn’t stopped since. She enjoys baking desserts and playing with her grandchildren.

Kim Weiler was born in Pennsylvania and graduated the University of the Arts with a degree in graphic design. Upon graduating, she was immediately hired by one of her professors at the Katz Wheeler Design firm. She loves design, gardening, sweet tea and all French bulldogs.

Amanda and Kim are excellent complements to one another-one could even say the Yin and Yang of design. Being very different people but with interconnected forces is the reason their partnership continues to flourish.
