Do you know the history behind Mother’s Day? The celebration of mothers started several centuries ago and remains an important date in the calendar today. The Greeks celebrated their goddess, Rhea, considered Mother of the Gods, and the Romans honored their Mother goddess, Cybele. 

Since the 16th century, Christianity featured Mothering Sunday on their calendar, which wasn’t necessarily a celebration of motherhood but rather a day when people returned to their “Mother” church for a special service. Our tradition of Mother’s Day gifting came from children picking flowers on their way to church and giving them to their mothers. The Enchanted Florist and Helen Olivia Flowers know all too well that flower delivery is considered the go-to gift for Mother’s Day!

Here in the States, the idea started when Anna Jarvis held a memorial service for her mother on May 12, 1907. Americans began observing this day and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday on the second Sunday in May.

You don’t need to have given birth to gain recognition on this special day. Mothers include foster moms, aunties, sisters; any woman who raised you as a kid and stuck by you as a moody teenager.
