While in high school and part of college, I worked for a large department store, Garfinckel’s. I’m sure most of you haven’t heard that name but it was an amazing, beautifully appointed department store whose faded elegance will never be seen again.

The flagship store, located on 14th and F Streets in Washington D.C. is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It’s an example of a 1920s department store that anchored a downtown historic retail corridor, and contributed to a city’s commerce and economic development. There were locations in Maryland and Virginia, but the location in D.C. was on a different level and a very special place to visit. They had a restaurant called the Greenbrier where ladies lunched and elevator operators would ask, “which floor?” when you stepped inside. 

Some of my fondest memories of shopping with my mother took place at that downtown store. Prom dresses, makeup, wedding gowns, shoes, bags, you name it, we shopped for everything there. As Mother’s Day approaches, I’m reminded of these and many other special moments. I consider it an honor to spoil my mother on this special day. While she is not the easiest to buy for, I always know that jewelry will make her extremely happy. 

Recently a customer shopping for his wife at Patina, was browsing when he finally asked if we thought his wife would like jewelry. In unison, we all practically shouted “YES!” We offer several lines: Julie Vos, Anabel Aram, Capucine de Wulf, Halcyon Days, Janis Savitt and Mindy Lam.
