Restaurant Report: The Chewish Deli

Have you ever craved a bagel sandwich but not known where to find one in Old Town? Look no further than The Chewish Deli - coming in August to the former Pendleton Carryout Co. location. With their New York-style, hand-rolled water bagels and traditional Jewish Deli cuisine, The Chewish Deli will soon become your new favorite to-go breakfast and lunch spot.  Previously known as “Genuine Water Bagels,” in February 2020, The Chewish Deli officially began serving the area with their mobile truck. You may have picked up one of their bagels at Misha’s Coffee Shop or spotted their food truck around town. The founder, Gregg Linzey, feels lucky and grateful to have happened upon this new location. For those fond of their truck, fear not - they plan to continue truck service while their Pendleton location is operating. The new site will not have seating and operate as carry-out only, but for the busy Alexandrian, a bagel to-go is perfect.   With so many businesses moving to a takeout and delivery service, The Chewish Deli did not stumble to transition and adapt to new COVID-friendly service as they were already operating with delivery and takeout. Moving from a truck to a physical “brick and mortar” location is an exciting step for Gregg and his team. Working from a fixed location, Gregg plans to expand their deli menu to bring in more traditional Jewish deli items, a need he finds missing from the array of cuisine available in Alexandria.   Originally from Massachusetts, Gregg can be found in a Boston hat laughing with his NY/NJ customers over sports rivalries. But Gregg has called Old Town his home since 2015. He loves the Old Town community and hopes to become a staple for customers with his water bagels and traditional Jewish deli goods.Looking ahead, partnering with other Alexandria restaurants is an ambition for The Chewish Deli. Gregg hopes to co-brand sandwiches to bring some fun to their menu, mix things up, and spotlight other businesses in the community.
