Restaurant Report: Vermilion

Welcome back, Vermilion! After an extended pandemic closure, this Old Town staple reopened its doors on July 19 with a new menu, new look, and a new chef.

The long-awaited reopening brings Benjamin Pflaumer as Vermilion’s new Executive Chef. Chef Ben has served as the Executive Chef at Osteria Morini and, more recently, the culinary director of Creative Food Group, overseeing Washington, D.C. restaurants Masseria and Philotimo. His talent and passion in the kitchen will surely bring Vermilion back from hibernation with success.

The restaurant is a local favorite for its cozy and romantic atmosphere and seasonal American dishes. From starters and salads to main dishes and desserts, the menu features farm-fresh contemporary American cuisine with plates designed to share. Vermilion is brought to us by the Neighborhood Restaurant Group, also known for Del Ray favorite Evening Star Cafe.

Last week, I was thrilled to visit Vermilion after awaiting its reopening post-pandemic. Located on a lively block of upper King Street, the American restaurant sits steps away from our Stylebook friends Penny Post and Red Barn Mercantile and around the corner from Jeni’s Ice Cream. Its new look includes a structured outdoor-dining area, a freshly painted exterior, and a new sign ready to welcome diners.

We sampled and shared three courses: The Stormy Bay Oysters with fennel granita and borage, the Summer Garden Salad topped with a delicious tomato vinaigrette, and the Potato Ravioli with sea salt oysters, lemon, and cherry tomatoes. All were delicious, and I especially loved our start with the oysters. Each dish was simple yet packed with flavor and creative style.

Be sure to check out their refreshing cocktail menu, including non-alcoholic mocktails to pair with dinner, along with their list of wines and full bar. Vermilion’s staff was very friendly, and our meal was delicious, making for a wonderful dinner date out on the town!
