Bangs Are Never Just Bangs
Every few months, it happens.
Someone sits in my chair, pauses for a second, and says:
“So… I’ve been thinking about bangs.”
Usually followed by nervous laughter.
As hairstylists, we know this moment well. Because bangs are rarely ever just about hair. They tend to show up during seasons of transition. After breakups. Before big life changes. During burnout. Or sometimes simply because someone no longer recognizes the version of themselves staring back in the mirror.
There is something emotional about changing the hair around your face.
And lately, bangs are everywhere again.
Soft curtain bangs. Wispy French inspired fringe. Shaggy rock and roll texture. Fuller fringe paired with dimensional color or playful pops of pink. Bangs that feel romantic, edgy, expressive, and somehow nostalgic all at once.
Celebrity culture has certainly helped reignite the obsession. Dakota Johnson’s signature fringe continues to dominate salon inspiration photos, while Sabrina Carpenter’s airy curtain bangs have practically taken over TikTok and Pinterest mood boards. Even Jennifer Aniston recently joked online to “think before you bang,” which honestly may be some of the most accurate hair advice on the internet.
What I love most about bangs right now is that they no longer feel overly “done.” They feel softer. More personalized. Less about perfection and more about personality.
The right fringe can completely shift the energy of a haircut without requiring a dramatic transformation.
Sometimes it softens the face.
Sometimes it highlights the eyes.
Sometimes it creates movement where hair previously felt heavy.
And sometimes it simply helps someone feel a little more like themselves again.
But here is the part I always gently remind clients:
Bangs are a relationship.
A good one can absolutely elevate your entire look. A bad one can leave you questioning your decisions with a round brush in hand at 7 a.m.
Because despite what TikTok may suggest, bangs are not always effortless.
Humidity exists.
Cowlicks exist.
Forehead sweat exists.
And there is almost always a learning curve.
This is why consultation matters so much.
The best bangs are not copied directly from Pinterest. They are tailored to the person wearing them. Hair texture, density, lifestyle, and styling habits all matter. A soft bottleneck fringe behaves very differently than a heavy blunt bang or a textured shag fringe.
The goal is never to force someone into a trend.
The goal is to create harmony between the haircut and the person.
And honestly, I think that is what people are really searching for right now.
Not perfection.
Not sameness.
Just something that feels a little more like themselves.
Maybe that is why bangs continue to come back decade after decade. They offer transformation, but in a softer and more approachable way.
And every once in a while, someone leaves the salon with bangs that suit them so perfectly it feels like they should have had them all along.
Those are my favorite moments.
Just maybe don’t cut them yourself at midnight after a difficult week.
