Embracing Your Hair's Natural Texture in Your 30s, 40s, and 50s

As women, our hair is often a reflection of our identity, style, and even mood. But as we journey through different stages of life, our hair can also change in texture, volume, and manageability. Embracing these changes and learning to work with our natural hair texture can be both liberating and empowering. At deZEN, we believe that every woman deserves to feel confident and beautiful in her own skin—and hair.

Understanding Your Hair's Changing Texture

Hair texture can change due to various factors, including age, hormonal shifts, pregnancy, medication and lifestyle changes. Women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s might notice differences in curl pattern, frizz, and even thickness. Understanding these changes is the first step toward embracing your natural texture.

Tips for Embracing Your Natural Texture

1. Moisture is Key: As we age, our hair tends to become drier. Invest in a high-quality moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Products that are sulfate-free and rich in natural oils can help maintain hydration and reduce frizz.

2. Regular Trims: Keeping your hair healthy involves regular trims to avoid split ends. This is especially important for those with curly or wavy hair, as split ends can make your hair appear frizzier and more unmanageable. While growing out your hair, getting even a little trim can be daunting, but it’s essential for maintaining healthy hair.

3. Embrace the Air-Dry: Whenever possible, let your hair air dry. Pro tip: Use a turban towel or two to help speed up the drying process. With my long hair and extensions I currently use two towels. One for right after I squeeze my hair out from the shower and put in my leave-in conditioner. I then wrap my hair up into the first turban towel for 10 minutes. Then, I take my hair out of the turban towel, re-spritz my ends with a little bit more leave-in conditioner, and wrap it back up for another 20 minutes. This speeds up the natural drying process of hair significantly. Overuse of heat styling tools can damage your hair’s natural texture. If you must use them, always apply a heat protectant spray first.

4. Define Your Curls: If you have wavy or curly hair, defining your curls can make a huge difference. Use a curl-enhancing cream or gel and apply it to damp hair. Scrunch your hair and let it dry naturally for beautiful, defined curls. We are loving Killer Curls and Killer Twirls by Kevin.Murphy.

5. Protective Styles: Protective hairstyles like braids, twists, and buns are great for managing natural textures and reducing damage from environmental stressors. My current obsession is using Hair Medicine by  Meraki Nomad on my scalp, then combing it through for a slicked-back braid, bun, or ponytail. It’s packed with Sweetgrass, Jasmine, and Rosemary to clear your mind, boost collagen, and repair, strengthen, and hydrate your hair. It also balances the scalp and fights dandruff with its rich blend of vitamins and minerals. My hair feels so much healthier! Plus, this gives your scalp ample opportunity to absorb all the nutrients and nourish those hair follicles while looking super chic!

DeZEN's Top Product Picks for Natural Texture

At deZEN, we pride ourselves on using and recommending products that are both effective and environmentally friendly. Here are some of our top picks:

  • Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner: Look for products that are free from sulfates and parabens. We love brands that incorporate natural ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and aloe vera. Kevin.Murphy Young.Again shampoo and conditioner are a crowd favorite!

  • Leave-In Conditioner: A good leave-in conditioner can provide an extra layer of moisture and protection. It's perfect for detangling and softening your hair. Admittedly, I switch up what my favorite one is from time to time and currently, the Innersense Sweet Pea leave-in conditioner is the front runner for me.

  • Curl Defining Cream: For our curly-haired beauties, a curl-defining cream can help enhance and maintain your natural curl pattern without the crunch. Quiet Calm Curl Control by Innersense is recommended for people with a tighter, coarser curl pattern. Use a very light, diluted amount if you have finer hair stands and curls.

  • Heat Protectant Spray: If you use heat styling tools, a protectant spray is a must to shield your hair from damage. If you follow my blog, then you know I am a huge fan of Goldie Locks Heat Protectant.
