Humidity Hacks: How to Style Your Hair for All-Day Hold

Stepping out of your car, you glimpse your reflection in the window and you inwardly shriek, “Aaaaahhhhh, it’s back!” Humidity! You thought you looked pretty darn good when you were getting ready this morning. What happened?? You look like you ran a 5K and then sprinted through a car wash. Maybe it was those extra few minutes spent outside chatting with a friend. Now your hair has shadows for days.

Don’t fret, I’m here to help with some humidity-proof hairstyles that are more resistant to the air’s moisture and will help you maintain style while managing the frizz.

1. Braided Hairstyles: Braids are a great option for humid weather as they keep your hair secure and minimize frizz. Try a classic like a French braid, Dutch braid, or fishtail braid. Or opt for more intricate styles like crown braids or waterfall braids. My fave for when you’re in a hurry: ponytail braid.

2. Buns and Updos: High buns, low buns, and more finished updos are great choices for humid days. They’ll keep the hair off your neck and face, preventing it from becoming frizzy or unruly due to humidity. Experiment and try a sleek ballerina bun, messy top knot, or a chic chignon.

Don’t know where to start? There’s a YouTube video for everything – which is clutch when trying something new. Make sure you type in something like, how to do a ballerina bun on yourself,” because it’s a little more challenging when doing it on your own hair.

3.  Ponytails and Ponytail Variations: Ponytails are versatile and practical, and most important – quick to do. For a sleek look, opt for a low ponytail or a high ponytail with smoothed-down edges. Add texture and volume by adding curls or waves, or by making it a braided or twisted ponytail.

4. Natural Texture Styles: Embrace your natural hair texture and work with it rather than against it. Curly, wavy, and coily hair can look gorgeous in humidity-proof styles like wash-and-go styles, twist-outs, braid-outs, and pineapple updos.

Use styling products designed for your hair texture to enhance definition and manage frizz. I recommend Kevin.Murphy Killer Curls Wash, Rinse and Twirls.

5. Sleek and Straight Hairstyles: If you prefer a sleek and polished look, opt for straight hairstyles that are resistant to humidity. Start with adding an anti-frizz product I like: Color WOW Dream Coat Ultra-Moisturizing Anti-Frizz Treatment, and blowdry it cold for longevity. Once dried, use a flat iron to smooth the hair and finish with a lightweight, anti-frizz serum or hairspray to maintain sleekness and control frizz. I recommend Kevin. Murphy Young.Again, and Goldie Locks Flexible Hold Hair Spray.

6. Half-Up Hairstyles: Half-up hairstyles combine the convenience of wearing the hair down but with the practicality of keeping it off your face. Try half-up buns, half-up ponytails, or half-up braids for a stylish and humidity-proof look.
