Unlocking the Mysteries of Hair: Answers to the 7 Most Frequently Asked Questions

Hair care is a topic that transcends generations and cultures, with everyone seeking the secret to luscious locks. Our team at Salon deZEN tackles some frequently asked questions about hair to help you unravel the mysteries of your mane.

1. How often should I wash my hair?

The frequency of hair washing depends on your hair type. Generally, 2-3 times a week is suitable for most people. Overwashing can strip natural oils, while underwashing may lead to a greasy scalp. One of my favorite tricks is to pregame with dry shampoo so right after you wash and style your hair, put a little bit of dry shampoo right at the root for lift, and it helps prevent oil buildup before it even starts. I use Fresh.Hair by Kevin Murphy.

2. Does trimming hair make it grow faster?

Trimming doesn't directly affect hair growth from the roots, but it prevents split ends, promoting healthier strands. This means that your split ends are not breaking thereby keeping a fuller healthier head of hair as it grows longer. Regular trims can give the illusion of faster growth.

3. Is it okay to use hot styling tools regularly?

Excessive heat can damage hair. If you use styling tools frequently, invest in a good heat protectant. We love Kevin Murphy’s HEATED.DEFENSE which is a weightless and invisible leave-in treatment foam to protect your hair against damage associated with heated and mechanical tools.

Providing heat protection up to 232˚C/ 450˚F, this leave-in foam distributes easily and disappears in all hair types, providing a weightless protective shield. Try to also give your hair occasional breaks from heat styling.

4. How can I add volume to my hair?

Boost volume by using a voluminizing shampoo, styling with root lift products, and opting for layered haircuts. One of my current favorites is Kevin Murphy’s Ever.Thicken which is activated by the heat of your blow dryer. This lightweight spray creates thicker, fuller hair that lasts. It helps lock out humidity to seal in a longer lasting blow dry.

And like I mentioned above dry shampoo is also a handy tool for adding texture and volume.

5. Can hair color damage my hair?

Coloring can cause damage, especially if done frequently with major color changes especially when using bleach. Opt for professional products, ask your stylist to use Olaplex in their lighter, if lifting, multiple shades, deep condition regularly, and allow time between color changes for your hair to recover.

6. How do I combat frizz?

Use hydrating products, embrace leave-in conditioners or serums. A crowd favorite is definitely the newish. Color Wow Extra Strength, Dream Coat. This powerful, ultra-moisturizing, anti-frizz treatment keeps dry/dehydrated hair and coily/curly hair glassy-smooth, straight and frizz-resistant through 3-4 shampoos.

7. What's the secret to shiny hair?

Healthy hair equals shiny hair. Keep it moisturized, limit heat styling, and consider using a clarifying shampoo occasionally to remove product buildup. I recommend Kevin Murphy Maxi.Wash. Designed to deliver a much-needed detox, this gentle yet effective clarifier removes the build-up of unwanted products and chemicals from the hair.

Remember, understanding your hair type and adopting a personalized care routine are key to achieving the vibrant and healthy hair you desire. Happy hair days await!
