Street Style: Amanda Mertins

Walking through the quaint entrance of her store, I spot Amanda a few steps in. She radiates warmth, placing her hand on my arm gently as she speaks, welcoming me to her second home, Patina Polished Living. While she gives me a tour, she reinforces the benefits of a brick-and-mortar: people can envision how things will look in their own homes.

Moving from room to room, she points out unique products and finds, explaining the origin and features of each. Rarely speaking about herself, she shares stories about her business partner Kim, her life partner Helmut, her sons, her daughters-in-law, and her grandchildren – with a new bundle of love on his way soon.

“Grandchildren?” I think. Her skin is flawless and glowing. And she gives me her full attention, even as her phone buzzes repeatedly, humming the theme song from Law & Order: SVU. She never looks down once, and that focus makes it clear to see why she so easily connects with her clients – she loves being present and on the floor. She also prides herself on being direct: “I don’t want anyone to buy the wrong thing. I won’t sell something to someone if it’s not right for their home.”

She and Kim moved into their new location on Columbus Street off King last summer, having recently celebrated ten years in business. “Back then, we didn’t do the research, we were wrapped up in the romance of it all, and just jumped into the deep end. Being a small business owner is a constant learning process and your customers will teach you the most, from store policies to pieces to carry.”

While Patina has a wish list customers can keep on file, I suggest adding Amanda’s smart, sophisticated look to the very top. She embodies classic beauty in every sense.
