The 89th Historic Garden Week In Virginia Is Here

This year marks the 89th Historic Garden Week in Virginia! The Garden Club of Virginia offers tours statewide from Saturday, April 23 through Saturday, April 30, encouraging visitors to tour private gardens, public parks, and historic sites throughout Virginia. Old Town Alexandria’s Historic Garden Week tour is April 23, hosted by The Garden Club of Alexandria and The Hunting Creek Garden Club.

Historic Garden Week benefits the restoration of historic gardens and landmarks in Virginia, and all proceeds fund the restoration and preservation of Virginia’s historic public gardens. Funds also help provide graduate-level research fellowship programs in landscape architecture and support a Garden Club of Virginia Centennial project with Virginia State Parks. In addition, the statewide tours open the doors to 128 private properties, offering access to beautiful interiors and their surrounding gardens.

As someone who has always loved Alexandria in the spring, I love how Virginia’s statewide garden tours bring the beauty of our city to garden lovers across Virginia. The Old Town Alexandria tour visits five historic homes:  515 South Fairfax Street, 508 South Fairfax Street, 206 Duke Street, 323 Duke Street, and 512 Prince Street. Admission also includes access to places of interest, including Carlyle House Historic Park at 121 North Fairfax Street, Green Spring Gardens at 4603 Green Spring Road, The Lee-Fendall House Museum and Garden at 614 Oronoco Street, Gunston Hall (15 miles south of Alexandria), River Fam at 7931 East Boulevard Drive, George Washington’s Mount Vernon, The Torpedo Factory Arts Center at 105 North Union Street, and The Old Presbyterian Meeting House at 321 South Fairfax Street. The Carlyle House Historical Park, Green Spring Gardens, and Mount Vernon are also Garden Club of Virginia restoration projects. In addition, Old Presbyterian Meeting House will provide complimentary light refreshments at 316 South Royal Street from 11:30am-3pm.
