The Art of Transition: What to Wear Between Now and Fall

When we headed to market last December to buy what’s called our summer and pre-fall delivery, we knew it would be a challenge. Everything arrives in June, and since we’re not located in a vacation destination, ordering super-summery pieces doesn’t always make sense. By that point, most of our store is already on sale, and when customers stop by, they’re often looking for markdowns rather than full-priced sundresses.

Pre-fall items can be just as tough. No one wants to try on a heavy sweater when it’s one hundred degrees outside, no matter how beautiful it is.

So we do our best to focus on transitional pieces. Styles that can be worn right now, but also hold their place in your closet come fall. That’s exactly what I love about the new Apiece Apart delivery. It’s full of easy, wearable pieces that feel right for summer but won’t feel out of place in September or October.

Around here, it doesn’t reliably cool off until late October. A floral strappy dress may not feel right that late in the year, but it’s still too warm for true fall fashion. These two Apiece Apart dresses are the solution to that in-between season.

The lightweight skirt and pants are made of breathable cotton, which makes them versatile for many months to come. We also brought in one lightweight sweater. Their asymmetrical cardigan was a customer favorite last winter, and this updated version is ideal for breezy nights and over-air-conditioned offices.

My personal favorite is the Marca knit top. It’s a new silhouette and incredibly flattering. It looks great with either the spa pant or the skirt, and it feels fresh but seasonless.

Stop by The Hive to check out our newest arrivals before you head out for the holiday. And don’t miss the sale racks. Many pieces are now fifty percent off.

Owner | The Shoe Hive/The Hive

I spent the first part of my career as a copywriter who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive.  At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
