Not Your Typical Ulla: 4 Ulla Johnson Looks

Earlier this week The Hive featured the items Ulla Johnson is known for: feminine dresses topped with the perfect amount of puff, ruffle and details that make them feminine but not overly fussy. These are the pieces that really put Ulla Johnson on the map. As the brand has grown she has evolved into other offerings and pieces that might not be what you typically think of when someone says “Ulla.” These changes of pace, of course, are the pieces that most excite me about this fall. They are also some of the pieces that are on my personal order.

First off is the suiting. I ordered this suit as a personal ticket and wasn’t sure if I should bring it into the store. I was so excited when they had inventory of both the Carine pant and the Dhemi Jacket. I didn’t order myself the Noemie top, but it’s a top I wish I wore. I knew when I ordered it for the event – Megan Brown had to wear it.

The next item you might not think of when you think of Ulla Johnson is denim. I actually have had requests to carry it, so a trunk show was a great way to try a few pieces. I love the light grey color, and the cuts of the Willow Jean and Bobbi jacket just elevate denim a bit. We have carried an Ulla denim skirt before and they always fly out. They have the cut down, it’s flattering and not too bulky.

The other category you might think of with Ulla, and one we never carry, is evening. We really don’t do as much evening wear as I wish we could. But we can bring in a few items for the event. The Demara dress is a showstopper. I think it can be worn 12 months out of the year and it will never go out of style. Something else I have ordered for myself – and there is one each season I usually can’t live without – a dressy skirt. She always does a skirt that is so beautiful and so special that you want to buy it even if you have no reason to have it in your closet. That was the Adara skirt for me this year. It is a work of art and I was so happy they could send us a few pieces. Pair it with a button down or simple sweater and you are set for any wedding or cocktail party.

As you can see, Ulla has so many great items that are a little outside the box of her typical offerings. So even if you aren’t a ruffle or puff sleeve person there is something in the fall collection for everyone.

Stop by for a cocktail Thursday night at The Hive or shop all weekend with us. All Ulla Johnson is 20 percent off from August 22 - 25.

Owner | The Hive and The Shoe Hive

I spent the first part of my career as a copywriter who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive.  At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
