"Sometimes you just need to wear something that makes you smile."
There’s a new find at The Hive. I give Alicia McCaslin credit for it. Or maybe if folks think I have lost my mind I will have to blame her for the encouragement.Last time we went to market, Alicia was at the Findings Showroom that represents lines both TSALT and The Hive carry. It actually is the home to most of my best brands -- Isabel Marant, Ulla Johnson, The Great, and Jerome Dreyfuss, to name a few. She texted me and said “you have to look at this t-shirt line” and sent me a photo of a shirt that said Hairy Styles with drawings of some of fashion's current super stars: Kanye and North, Cara Delevingne, Alessandro Michele, Rihanna, Karl Lagerfeld, and Kendall Jenner. There was some reason this shirt just made me smile. I always knew Alicia and I were cut from the same cloth when it came to our love of clothing and fashion; this instance secured my knowledge our similar sense of humor.I was up in NYC a few weeks later and almost forgot to look at the shirts. Thank goodness I didn’t. The line is called Unfortunate Portrait, and as I went through the rack each one made me laugh even more than the last. Of course my favorite was “De La SoulCycle” with the members of the group on spin bikes. There is a slight problem with this shirt: not a single person that works at either of my stores knows the 90s-era band! I even tried to sing “Me, Myself, and I” and it only made them all the more confused.I get that these shirts are not for everyone. I read an article by Amelia Diamond on the Man Repeller blog about Unfortunate Portrait and its creator, illustrator Max Dower, and it kind of sums up the line: “He is — and I say this as the absolute highest form of a compliment one can give — pretty weird. And thank God for his weird, because my life meant nothing before he created this.”Sometimes you just need to wear something that makes you smile.
