Uniting for a Cause: Alexandria Boutiques Team Up to Support the Center for Alexandria’s Children

When the Center for Alexandria’s Children reached out about a possible fundraiser, I immediately thought—this is it! I had been wanting to collaborate with some of my fellow family-focused boutiques, and this felt like the perfect opportunity. What if we all used our platforms to raise money and collect in-kind donations for the Center? What kind of impact could seven local boutiques make for one incredibly important cause?

It’s an experiment I’m excited to launch, and I’m deeply grateful to the teams at 529 Kids Consign, Monday’s Child, Ms. Moxie’s Moon Shop, and Old Town Books for joining in.

As Alexandria’s only nationally accredited Child Advocacy Center, the Center for Alexandria’s Children provides prevention, intervention, and education programs that address abuse, support families in crisis, and help ensure that all children feel safe, loved, and empowered. “Every child deserves protection from abuse and neglect,” shared Acting Director Teri Cheshire. “Even in our cherished community, the need is real. By saving childhood, we create opportunities for children to reach their full potential.”

When I visited the Center’s office, I was struck by how much I didn’t know about the depth of their work. From child advocacy to developmental playgroups to resource centers for families in need, their team offers a remarkable network of support for our most vulnerable neighbors. If you do nothing else today, please take a few minutes to watch the video below. I promise it will be time well spent.

Here’s how you can join us from June 14 – 29 in supporting this mission:

  • 529 Kids Consign and Monday’s Child will host a clothing drive to fill the  ALX Closet, a resource for families in crisis. Drop off gently used clothing—or shop in-store to donate brand-new items like coats, socks, and underwear.

  • Ms. Moxie’s Moon Shop will collect period products and new undergarments for the ALX Closet.

To multiply the impact, Red Barn Mercantile, Penny Post, and Pippin Toy Co. will match monetary donations up to $1,000.

Giving back has always been central to our mission. Supporting our neighbors—especially those doing such important, often unseen work—is part of who we are. When you shop local, you’re not just supporting small business; you’re investing in the community. I’ve said it before, and it’s worth repeating: small businesses give three times more to their communities than big box stores.

On behalf of all the participating boutiques, thank you for showing up, sharing the word, and making this community one we’re proud to call home.

Owner Amy Rutherford started Red Barn because she wanted to deliver a service — to provide both old and new in one place. No longer will busy shoppers be limited to reproductions or forced to shop multiple flea markets for the look or gifts they want. The trick in blending old and new, vintage and modern, classic and quirky, is balance. And Amy’s knack for mixing rustic antiques with urban chic has created a look that is both fresh and familiar.

Located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, Penny Post is an independent boutique specializing in custom stationery and wedding invitations. Inspired by the art of personal correspondence, the power of handwritten notes, and the smell of freshly printed stationery, we surround ourselves with quirky, hilarious, and classically beautiful things to make life a little brighter.
