December is Coming: Pick Up Your Advent Calendars!
With December on the horizon, we’d like to show you the Advent calendars we have this year! So many creative, fun, and tasty ways to countdown to Christmas. We have several options that all double as darling decorations and a few that have extra special surprises inside, some edible and some that will last for years to come.
Did You Fall Back? Way Back?
In this week’s episode of “What kind of nostalgic goodies does Caiti have up her sleeve?,” I am reminded again of those simpler times. No responsibility, carefree and oblivious. Do I miss them? Sure. Would I trade today-me for yesterday-me? Not a chance. Yesterday-me would not have the appreciation for those wild times that today-me does.
Who’s Ready for Red Barn Mercantile’s Holiday Reveal?!
For us we know that the holidays are full of emotion – love, happiness, stress, and melancholy. It’s our job to make them as joyful and stress-free as possible and we take that job very seriously. I’m extremely excited for the selection that we curated for you this year and can’t wait for you to see it! On November 7 from 6pm to 9pm Red Barn Mercantile will fling open its door to our annual Christmas wonderland!
Penny Post and Meant To Be Calligraphy On Love Is Blind!
My friend Michele of Meant To Be Calligraphy and I have been sitting on a big secret for over a year. Last year about this time – actually, it was the day of Doggie Trick or Treat! – we closed Penny Post for the day and Michele taught a private brush lettering class for Love Is Blind’s (now favorite) couple, Taylor and Garrett. You can see it all unfold in Episode 10 (around the 21 min. mark) of this season!
Banwood Bikes, Trikes, Scooters, and Skateboards Trunk Show at Pippin Toy Co.
Tricycles and bicycles are a staple on most holiday wish lists, so we wanted to make sure you got yours well in advance. This weekend, we are having a Banwood trunk show. We will have examples of everything they have and all the colors they offer so you can see them in person. They will be here well in advance of the holidays so you can delight your little people this season!
I’m A Voter
I know that in Northern Virginia I’m preaching to the choir about voting. The majority of people who can vote in this area are already registered. Hell, registering to vote is the first thing some kids do when they turn 18. I know mine did. While those who can vote are likely registered, I still feel like it’s our responsibility to encourage voting every election cycle. The first thing to do is make a voting plan.
Play Love is Blind Bingo with Penny Post!
The closest to reality TV I get is The Great British Bake Show. I love me some Pru and Paul. The Britts are just so nice to each other when competing. We can use more of that, don’t you think?! Love is Blind is not something I would normally gravitate to, but since they are in D.C., we thought — what the hell let’s have some fun with it and play BINGO!
Puzzles and Test Drives and Moo Deng, Oh My!
Do you know what excites me about fall and October? Apart from celebrating my parents’ birthdays, football, crunchy leaves and golden hues, it is the perfect balance of ‘cooler weather, I can still do things outside without fear of getting the Zika or ‘humidity exhaustion’ (I bet that’s a thing) - AND it is permission to do none of that and stay inside with a warm cup of cider or ‘a nice calming indoor activity’.
Get Ready for Spooky Season
I LOVE October. It’s the perfect temperature, I can wear sweatshirts with sandals, mellow creme pumpkins hit the candy shelves, the leaves are peak color, and Halloween. Those are all good reasons to love the month, am I right?! I’ve never been one to dress up for Halloween as an adult, but I revel in the joy it brings to children.
Yesterday’s Pen Pal, Your BFF. Today’s Pen Pal: Your Undecided Neighbor?
There was a time (cue “I Dreamed a Dream”) when writing was all we had. I’m not talking about hundreds of years ago, quills and inkwells and carrier pigeons (but I am a little bit). I am grateful to be of the Xennial generation; we were kids in the 80’s AND 90’s. What if autumn IS the adult version of summer? I am eager to reconnect with old friends and autumn is the permission to exit summer and welcome cozy letter writing by a fire...
What We’re Loving: Wineries Within Driving Distance
The temps are cooling and those beautiful autumn days are coming. While fall is full of festivals, apple picking and harvests, we do love to squeeze in a day trip to a winery or two…or more. We asked our contributors to share their faves within driving distance of Alexandria.
Hotel Heron: The Cool Factor the Old Town Wedding Scene So Desperately Needed
Hotel Heron has a vibe, and if you’ve been there you know it. History meets modern meets eclectic meets warm is how I’d describe the furnishings and finishes. Every detail has been selected with care and thought. When I was invited back to the hotel in my official florist capacity to collaborate on a wedding styled shoot, I hoped I would find the same feel carried through to the events space.
Making Pippin Toy Co. Part Three: Giving a Store Personality
I like to give my stores a personality. Each one is distinct. When we tell people that we own all three they usually see the resemblance, but for the most part, we’ve done a good job of imbuing them with their own unique personality. Honestly, figuring out who they will be is most of the fun. What do they look like? Smell like? Even sound like?
I’ve Decided I Need a Home by the Water Surrounded by Evergreens
Recently, my family took a trip to the Pacific Northwest. Our first stay was in a funny little house tucked away in a corner of a tidy community with homemade signs that asked us to watch out for the family of roughly eight deer who made their home there. Surrounded by evergreens, the house was on the edge of a bluff high above the Straight of Juan de Fuca.
What We’re Planning: Summer Must-Dos Before September Arrives
The reality is, summer did fly by, and the kids are already waiting at the bus stop. When you’re on the go 24/7, trying to savor every precious (and humid) moment of summer – August immediately follows July 4th weekend. We asked our contributors to share what they’re squeezing in before fall arrives.

Since Cisco Home furniture is now being crafted in North Carolina, the lead time is eight to 12 weeks. If you act soon – and all goes well – you could have your new furniture in time for hosting family this holiday season! As I’ve pointed out in the past, Cisco Home makes an exceptional piece of furniture that’s always worth the wait.
Teachers Need School Supplies, Too!
Every year we collect school supply donations for students. This year we wanted to try something different. Something that has a bit of a multiplying effect. Something that helps the teachers that help the students. Yep, this year we are raising school supplies for teachers!
The Planner (You) and the Planner (It)
Whether you dread the summer months and steamy discomfort (yep, that’s me), or you love the summer (because free vitamin D?), or you are indifferent and maybe just tolerate it as the gateway to autumn (the clear winner of Mid-Atlantic seasons) - something we can all look forward to is Planner Season!
AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH! August 3rd is Stationery Store Day!!
August 3rd is Stationary Store Day!! Mark your calendars now and make your plans to be at Penny Post early. Last year, we had a line of about 40 people strong as soon as we opened the door. When I say our paper people are serious about paper, I’m not kidding. We can’t wait to celebrate with you!
From Our Team: Tips for Family Travel this Summer
When our kids were born my husband waxed poetic about family road trips. He longed for the nostalgia of it (clearly, he doesn’t remember pain). On our first road trip with a small child, it didn’t take long for reality to set in. Traveling with kids is hard. For everyone.
