What Is A “Craftsman?”

Have you ever heard the term, “craftsman,” when someone described the style of a home? You may be familiar with and be able to identify homes that are designated as colonial, federal, split-level, or Cape-Cod. Although some homes can look easy to identify, some are not as simple. Today, I am going to tell you about the craftsman style of home, the style featured in our new construction listing on Fort Hunt Road, and popular throughout Alexandria.

A craftsman home can be identified by several characteristics on its exterior. A front porch is often on a craftsman home, providing a welcoming and inviting quality, often with tapered columns. On the exterior, you will also notice a low-pitched roof with single or double gales and overhangs. It also typically has painted siding, traditionally a shaker shingle style. These homes are also full of natural light with double hanging windows. Craftsman style homes also use natural materials, so it’s common to see earthy paint colors and flagstone on the exterior.
