What We’re Loving: Wineries Within Driving Distance

The temps are cooling – you know from 85 to 80 to 50 back to 82 again the next day…but we know they will dip and those beautiful autumn days are coming. While fall is full of festivals, apple picking and harvests, we do love to squeeze in a day trip to a winery or two…or more. We asked our contributors to share their faves within driving distance of Alexandria:

Britt, The Patterson Group: On 55 acres, Early Mountain Vineyards is dedicated to Bordeaux-type varietals like Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Their philosophy centers on crafting wines that truly reflect the character of the grapes. Visitors can enjoy a tasting room experience complemented by an on-site restaurant known for its excellent food. For a more relaxed setting, there’s a casual picnic area with a small menu and walk-up bar for wine. Nearby, the Inn at Willow Grove (named by Travel + Leisure one of the best resorts in the South) provides convenient and comfortable accommodations for those looking to extend their visit.

Maria Elizabeth, Salon deZEN: I would have to go with Linden Vineyards or Glen Manor. Both of these spots are doing amazing things with Virginia wines!

Hattie, ERA Boutique: I spent an incredible afternoon at Three Fox Vineyards & Brewery for a girlfriend's bachelorette weekend! I highly recommend taking your wine and charcuterie down to the river for a scenic picnic!

Ashley, Caravela: Stone Tower Winery. The wine cellar “caves” with the wine barrels, awesome tasting room and amazing views and patio make this a favorite stop on a weekend wine tour in VA!

Kristen, Women’s Therapy & Wellness: One of my top vineyard visits has been at RdV Vineyards in Delaplane, VA (though they’ve recently been acquired and may undergo a name change). While their tour and tasting experience is pricier than most in the area, it’s absolutely worth it. They provide an in-depth tour of the property and a comprehensive look into their winemaking process. The experience ends with a tasting paired with delicious small bites. Their reds are among my favorites, not just in Virginia, but anywhere. Highly recommended!

Katelin, Family First Law:  During the pandemic I went to The Salamander with some girlfriends and we went to Greenhill Vineyards. I think it may still be my favorite local winery!

Amy, Red Barn Mercantile, Penny Post, Pippin Toy Co.: It's a little longer drive than a day trip but I really enjoyed my time at Pippin Hill Farm. The wine, the setting, and the food were fantastic and the name was great too! ;)

Kendall, Moneta Accounting Solutions: Crimson Lane Vineyards! Stunning views, luxury experience, and great wine - how can you go wrong?
