Pour Over This: How Current Events Are Impacting the Wine World... and What It Means for You

As the buyer for Wine Gallery 108, staying abreast of consumer trends and current events surrounding wine is a significant part of the job.

There have been enormous shifts in consumers' buying habits, consumption patterns, and entertainment practices in the past few years that, some days, I feel dizzy from these movements in all directions. Let's examine some of these shifts and trends and see if you recognize yourself in any of them.

Tariffs and the Economy

Tariffs have been a real blow to the U.S. wine market. The mere mention of them affected sales before any increases were confirmed. Months later, the price hikes have slowed and the topic has quieted down — it's simply become business as usual. Many retailers and restaurants have shifted toward more value-driven wine regions to sidestep the steepest increases: Portugal, Greece, and the Balkans, for example, or Sancerre alternatives like Quincy, Pouilly-Fumé, and Coteaux du Giennois. These lesser-known Loire Valley regions neighbor Sancerre, share the same Sauvignon Blanc grape and similar soils, and deliver a comparable taste and quality in the glass.

Beyond tariffs, the broader economy shapes our customers' habits too. It's been a rollercoaster ride since the pandemic — a post-pandemic dip in alcohol consumption, inflation hitting retail hard, government shutdowns, federal job cuts, and now war with Iran. None of it is good news for a small business.

All of this adds up to a bigger focus on value and bringing lower-priced options to our customers.

Low- and No-Alcohol Options

Alcohol consumption has largely returned to normal since its post-pandemic dip, but demand for low- and no-alcohol options remains strong. We've always carried these for our customers who are pregnant, on medication, training for an event, or just taking a break — and our selection has grown considerably in the past couple of years, as has the quality. From sparkling and still wines to spritzers, mixers, beer, and spirits, we have something for everyone. Just come on in and see for yourself.

How Younger Consumers Drink

You've probably heard that younger consumers find wine too complicated or unapproachable. The numbers tell a different story. According to beverage analytics firm International Wines and Spirits Record, Gen Z's drinking rate has climbed from 66% just three years ago to 76% in 2026 — now outpacing Baby Boomers, whose rate has fallen to 71%, the lowest of any generation. And it's not just about frequency: the Wine Market Council's latest benchmark study found that millennials have officially overtaken Baby Boomers as America's top wine-consuming generation, now representing 31% of wine drinkers compared to 26% for Boomers. Gen Z's share of wine drinkers has grown too, climbing from 9% to 14% even though only about half of the generation is yet of legal drinking age.

The real story is that younger consumers are drinking differently, not less. Gen Z tends to buy fewer bottles but spend more per bottle, favoring the stories behind a bottle over critic scores — region, history, and provenance matter more than a rating. That makes a boutique shop like ours a natural fit: telling the stories behind the wine, the families who make it, and the regions it comes from is what we do best.

Cans, Boxes, and Single-Serve: Wine on the Go

Wine no longer has to mean a full bottle, a corkscrew, and an evening set aside for it. Canned wine has moved from novelty to a genuine growth category, with the global market on track to nearly triple by 2033. The appeal is simple: a can survives a hike or a festival without breaking, and it hands you a single, no-guesswork pour. Boxed wine has undergone its own reinvention — once the butt of jokes, it's now home to serious, well-made wine. Single-serve formats overall, cans included, have grown into a multi-billion-dollar slice of the industry.

It's Millennials and Gen Z leading the charge, choosing formats that keep up with an on-the-go life without giving up quality. We have expanded our own canned and single-serve selection to match — perfect for a picnic, a hike, or a low-key night in when a full bottle feels like more than you need.

Additional Trends We're Watching

Lighter-style reds that can be slightly chilled are having a moment — perfect for the region's brutal summer heat, whether for a picnic or an evening on the porch. Many consumers are moving away from the big, bold, and heavy reds that have dominated the market for decades. With these lighter options available, our customers are finding they gravitate toward freshness over heaviness.

We're also seeing demand for rosé year-round, helped by wider availability. When we move into cooler temps, I tend to steer customers toward deeper, richer rosés from Bandol or Tavel — excellent with Thanksgiving dinner, or even a burger.

Keeping up with all of this — tariffs, trends, younger drinkers, new formats — is part of what makes this job endlessly interesting. But at the end of the day, it comes down to one simple thing: finding you a wine you'll actually love. That's what my staff and I are here for, so come see us and let's find your next favorite bottle.
