Looking Hot When You’re Feeling Hot

Your face flushes. You’re burning from the inside. You have the sudden urge to jump into the freezer. Welcome to midlife, where hot flashes can become daily occurrences. I often talk about ways to reduce hot flashes, but today I thought I’d offer suggestions on how to dress comfortably for when they sneak up on you.

1. Dress in layers.

As stylist Alicia McCaslin always advises me: dress in layers. During the winter, I’ve learned how to get ahead of the cold weather by wearing lots of layers, sometimes four to five of them. In the warmer months, I layer to comfortably shed clothing as I feel too hot. Hot flashes don’t distinguish between the seasons, so always having a layering plan can help you strike when the iron is hot (pun intended).

2. Cooling pajamas.
My go-to is men’s boxer briefs, but many of my clients also love cooling pajamas. You can try these bamboo viscose pjs for an overnight cooling effect. There is also luxurious cooling nightwear available from Soma and Cozy Earth to help keep those night sweats from disturbing your sleep.

3. Wear breathable fabrics.

Breathable fabrics come in more than just nightwear, they are available for the daytime too. The best breathable fabrics are cotton and linen. You can also find comfort in flowy dresses and shorts that aren’t too tight and permit airflow. Elizabeth Todd and her team at The Hive will help you find flattering styles that will keep you cool. Leave the skinny jeans for when you are past this hot phase. I waited it out and dusted mine off. You’ll be able to do the same, too.

4. Do the updo.

Up to 45 percent of our body heat can be lost through the head and neck. I have a MANE of hair and I have mastered the art of the ponytail and the top-of-the-head bun. Getting my tresses off my neck helps bring in the cool breezes and lower the temperature.

5. Accessorize.

I love the trend of freezable necklaces. Put them on at night when you have night sweats and grab them for when you have an unexpected flash. Here is a fun one that no one will know is chilling you when you’re running hot. There are also cooling wristbands available at CVS. Have them ready!

6. Be confident.

And most importantly, be confident! Know that you are not alone in navigating perimenopause and menopause and that there are tools available to help you get through the hot flash moments. Walk proud and don’t sweat the small stuff.
