Summer Reads

Summer – It’s my favorite season. Long, lazy days, warm nights, and the perfect excuse to curl up with a captivating book. But for women in perimenopause or menopause, the heat can sometimes add a layer of discomfort to that idyllic picture, and evening anxiety can keep us from falling to sleep. Never fear…this summer, I’m recommending you embrace both relaxation and mind-stimulation. A captivating story or inspiring tale can give you just the break you need, whether poolside or tucked into bed.

My choices, light-hearted mysteries and fun fiction, are the perfect beach bag companions:

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus - A “top five” of mine (best ever) read about Elizabeth Zott, a 1950’s chemist fighting a male dominated profession with the added twist of romance, motherhood and friendship.

The Maid by Nita Prose - I love a strong, quirky heroine and The Maid promises to deliver. This New York Times bestseller weaves together a story of growth with a murder mystery, a formula for fun.

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman - Four friends in a retirement community who gather to discuss unsolved crimes work to unpack a real case. Sounds like lots of fun – and soon to be a movie!

Bonus Recommendations - I like to give myself a break from work reading in the summer because I consume books about wellness throughout the year. However, if you want to dive into some nonfiction on women’s midlife wellness, my all-time favorites are:

Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity by Dr. Peter Attia

The 4-Hour Body: An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman by Timothy Ferriss

Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams by Dr. Matthew Walker

Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone by Brené Brown

Radical Acceptance: Embracing Your Life With the Heart of a Buddha by Tara Brach

Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself by Dr. Kristen Neff

And while you’re enjoying your latest book, remember that reading is supporting your health. A study found that readers over the age of 50 experienced a 20% reduction in risk of all cause mortality compared to non book readers. We also experienced improved cognitive skills such as increased vocabulary, focus and critical thinking skills; stronger emotional intelligence and empathy; and stress reduction. And any long-time follower of mine knows that I recommend reading (not scrolling!) for a better night’s sleep.

I’m always on the lookout for good recommendations and would love to hear what you’re reading this summer, too. Pop over to my Instagram to share your suggestions.
