Alexandria Sidewalk Sale: 3 Days of Deep Discounts in Old Town

This year marks the 16th Annual Sidewalk Sale, and it’s bigger than ever. Until I began preparing this year, I didn’t realize I started it the summer my son was born. He was born on August 15, so I guess I squeezed it in before he arrived! When we started back in 2008, it was just a few of us: The Shoe Hive, fibre space, Red Barn, Bellacara, and a handful of others. We pulled a permit, set up sidewalk tables, and even scored free parking from the city. A lot has changed, but the unbeatable deals remain.

Now a collaborative effort between the Old Town Boutique District and Visit Alexandria, the event has grown to include over 31 stores, all offering the lowest prices of the year from August 8–10.

Expect 60–80% off at most participating boutiques, both indoors and out (don’t worry if a store doesn’t have tables outside, there are plenty of deals inside with air conditioning). Our store won’t have courtyard space this year, but we’ll still be offering serious steals.

If you’ve been to the Walkable Warehouse Sale in winter, think of the same great discounts—just with better weather.

Pro tip: Make a day of it. Grab lunch, treat yourself to a post-shopping glass of wine at Sonoma Cellars, or toast with Champagne at Coco’s Parlour.

Mark your calendar: this is the final markdown before fall, and you won’t want to miss it!

Owner | The Shoe Hive/The Hive

I spent the first part of my career as a copywriter who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive.  At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
