Fall Fun & Holiday Prep: October Events You Won’t Want to Miss

Hands down, fall is my favorite season, and October is my favorite fall month. I love January for the possibilities that come with a fresh start and July because it’s my birthday month, but October has a special place in my heart. The temps just start turning cooler, college football is in full swing (Boomer Sooner!), candy corn is on the shelves at every grocery store, pumpkins and mums start popping up on front stoops, the leaves turning colors (obviously), and the excitement of the Big Three holidays is in the air.

This October we are making the most of having a little fun and prepping for the upcoming holidays with several key events!

First up is the one I’m maybe the most excited about – our homage to New York in the Fall, a Pencil Bouquet Bar with all the trimmings! We are celebrating our favorite season and one of the all-time best rom coms,You’ve Got Mail on Saturday, October 4 from 10am to 6pm at Penny Post. Come create a bouquet of freshly picked pencils from a selection of our favorites and get a special pencil sharpening gift with purchase. We will be scattered with daisies – they are the friendliest flower after all – and pulling out the Polaroid for pics to add to your junk journal.

At Red Barn Mercantile, we’re getting ready for holiday hosting with two wonderful workshops from two amazing women! On October 9, join us for a workshop with the Ghostess with the Mostess, Danielle Couick of Magnolia Bluebird and Ghost Host.  Literally, she is the DMV’s expert on how to entertain. This woman creates the most magnificent events. From lavish corporate meetings and Mitzvahs to intimate dinners for friends, she knows all the rules and how to break them in the most stylish way. She will be here to teach you all the ins and outs for Creating Memorable Holiday Tablescapes.  Grab your tickets while they last, and do yourself a favor and follow Danielle everywhere on Instagram and sign up to receive The Host Edit, her mini-mag on all things entertaining.

While not particularly spooky, but still fun, starting on October 11 we will be making DIY Kaweco fountain pens at Penny Post! This is a new tradition from one of Germany’s finest fountain pen makers. For the last two years their DIY pen maker has been travelling the states so you can assemble your own pen. This year the pen is a gorgeous emerald green and comes in extra fine, fine, medium, and broad nibs. A great gift for yourself or a gift for someone this holiday season.

On October 12 we are thrilled to bring back Quince Blossom Ridge for another wonderful floral decorating project. From the mind of master creative and flower farmer Alexandra Mudry-Til, we bring you the Pressed Flower Pumpkin workshop. Make a beautiful centerpiece for your holiday tables that will rival any Jack-o-Lantern this Halloween. We have a few tickets left and space is limited so grab ‘em while you can!

We cannot forget Pippin Toy Co.! We’re still finalizing details but are really excited to bring you our first ever Family Derby Day. A fun take on the Scout classic Pinewood Derby Day, we are partnering with Candylab Toys to host a Pippin Toy Co. version for families. On October 25, we will be racing all afternoon, so I hope you’ll join us. Follow us on Instagram or sign up for our newsletter for more information as it becomes available.

And one more for good measure. Though it’s this weekend and not in October, I would be remiss if I didn’t share our free Leuchtturm1917 notebook embossing event at Penny Post. From September 26 to 28 the Leuchtturm notebook embosser will be making a brief appearance for free embossing on their world class A5 hardcover notebooks.  Delight a friend or your future self with one of these custom journals!

We have even more planned for November and December – including our epic Holiday Unveiling on November 6! - so be sure to follow us on Instagram or sign up for our emails!

Owner Amy Rutherford started Red Barn because she wanted to deliver a service — to provide both old and new in one place. No longer will busy shoppers be limited to reproductions or forced to shop multiple flea markets for the look or gifts they want. The trick in blending old and new, vintage and modern, classic and quirky, is balance. And Amy’s knack for mixing rustic antiques with urban chic has created a look that is both fresh and familiar.

Located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, Penny Post is an independent boutique specializing in custom stationery and wedding invitations. Inspired by the art of personal correspondence, the power of handwritten notes, and the smell of freshly printed stationery, we surround ourselves with quirky, hilarious, and classically beautiful things to make life a little brighter.
