Closet Clean Out 101: Top Tips from Stylists
Since January is known for so many things; clean eating, getting back to a routine of exercise, simplifying your life from the overindulgent months that are known as the holidays, why not add cleaning out your closet (that so many of us spend a good amount of money and time on!)? January is a great time to filter through your stuff, figure out what worked and what didn’t, and move on. (This is the #Consign part of the #ShopConsignRepeat campaign so you can #Shop come Spring!) Owning a consignment store definitely has its perks (first dibs, anyone?) but really the best part is the network of amazing stylists that we get to work with. Working with them so closely has opened my eyes that no, I do not know everything, and yes, there is so much to absorb and learn from these amazing women. And, as the saying goes, as we age, our style evolves. What’s great about working with stylists is that they are experts in this arena of “finding clothing that works for your lifestyle” evolution. They help make these decisions to make your life easier. So why not turn to them for some tips on cleaning out that closet.I asked a few of my favorite local stylists for their number one tip/ trick while I started to clean out my own closet and loved the variety of answers. “My number one closet edit tip is to identify the positive and negative color stories and silhouettes within your current wardrobe. This sets the stage for what you should and should not shop for. You’ll also have a lot of fun organizing your closet based on this framework!”

“My number one tip for a closet cleanse - edit embellished clothing sooner rather than later. Pay attention to the “extra” embellishments on clothing. Bows, laces, buttons, zippers - these are the elements of clothing that will date your clothing quickly. The collars of blouses and jackets fall into this category as well. My years of being a buyer have given me a keen eye on being able to identify clothing that is past its prime. Start coming to terms with how long you expect to wear your purchases with these extra embellishments and then apply a “one in - one out” rule.
